BOARDS AND COMMITTEE BI-ANNUAL REPORT FORM - PAGE 1 OF 3
BOARD OR COMMITTEE NAME:
FINE ARTS BOARD (14 members)
CHAIRPERSON:
LAURA BRUNEY
Jkts DONNA SHAW, Director
Tourism and Cultural Development
CITY LIAISON:
NUMBER OF MEETINGS HELD SINCE - January 01, 2003
HISTORY/ACTIVITIES:
(5) FIVE
The mission of the Fine Arts Board is to embrace and promote the work of
contemporary visual and cultural artists, enhance the appreciation for the arts in the
community at large, and to provide economic stimulation to under served
neighborhoods.
In 1974 the Fine Arts Board established the annual Miami Beach Festival of the Arts
two-day outdoor event as a showcase for the visual arts in the Miami Beach
community, appealing to residents, tourists, local business sponsors, patrons of the
arts, and fine arts exhibitors.
The Parks and Culture, then Parks and Recreation Departments housed the Fine
Arts Board and assisted with production and logistics of the annual event as it
roamed from Collins Avenue to Washington Avenue to 41st Street, to finally the North
Shore Park. The Office of Arts, Culture, & Entertainment took the reins in 1999 and
relocated the event to Ocean Terrace. The North Beach Development Corporation
accepted leadership of the event in the Spring of 2002. The Department of Tourism
and Cultural Development now houses the board and serves as liaison to the NBDC
to nurture the Arts-in-North-Beach year round incentive.
The Festival 2003 event in February, was the last year for hands-on facilitation from
the Fine Arts Board. NBDC has taken fiscal responsibility for the annual event and
has hired a year round event coordinator. The Fine Arts board will continue assisting
NBDC with the poster and exhibiting artist recruitment, selection, and on-site jury for
cash awards. The board will continue to grow the patron, the children's, and the local
artist programs.
In 2004 the Fine Arts Board will embark on developing a program to curate indoor
exhibit spaces in City facilities.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
. The 2003 "Beach Girl" created by Michael McKever, was a very successful marketing
tool. The image has appeared as a wall mural on the Byron Carlyle throughout the
"arts in north beach" season, on postcards, magazine covers, t-shirts, magnets, and
cable TV sots. The Ma or resented the artist with a roclamation in Janua .
The festival site had an approved visual appearance at the 73rd Street entrance and
at the VIP tent. The elimination of the main stage and live entertainment went
unnoticed.
The Patron VIP booth relocation set back from the South Arbor was an improvement.
Patron purchase coupon sales were down from the previous year.
The Children's Exhibit space was expanded to include the county schools. The
Children's Cultural Coalition booth in the NE corner was juxtaposed between the local
and county artwork and offered a more congenial family atmosphere.
The Condo parking logistics went smoothly. Barricades were added to prohibit turn
around.
The board honored a member nominated for an award at the ABC Luncheon.
FUTURE ACTIVITIES:
Maintain city website TCD/Fine Arts/Festival of the Arts pages.
Secure Festival poster artist 2004 (Sid Daniels).
Revisit cash award levels.
Partner with Cultural Arts Council Artist-in-Residency program.
Provide artist/poster recruitment and selection consultation.
Grow children's, local artist, and patron program.
Consider new grant funding sources.
Establish a program to curate indoor exhibit spaces in City facilities.
Consider printing Flamingo calendar and patron-of-the-arts palm cards to promote
cultural tourism.
