“The Committee for Quality Education was established in 1999 to guide the city’s efforts toward providing the best education possible in Miami Beach
public schools. The committee is vested with the power and authority to make recommendations to the city commission and to investigate, develop,
and carry out plans to promote and ensure the provision of quality education in Miami Beach public schools.
Members Present: Karmenchu Santana-Vega, Yvette Tache, Betsy Mateu, Judith Berson-
Levinson, Mary Keinath, Ivan Alvarez, Beth Edwards, Tiffany Heckler, Monica Matteo-
Santinas, Susie Stern, and Joshua Levy.
Members Absent: Karen Edelstein, Jordan Leonard, Tiva Leser, and Rachel Weissman.
Reviewed Minutes from January meeting and approved
1. Youth Music Festival – March 9, 2019 reminder provided
2. Drug Prevention Series to begin March with parent session in April on April 2, 3 16 and
18
3. IT Miami Beach Senior High School – Update provided and computer count still
underway
4. 41st Street crosswalk letter to FDOT shared and requested QEC members also reach out
to FDOT secretary
5. Beach High Field Commission contribution update from January meeting discussed at
$350,000 as a match grant for possible superbowl funds. Joint use agreement being
routed through legal departments.
6. STEAM Plus Enhancement Status update provided and requested QEC members share
youth experiences at next meeting
7. Educational Enhancement task force meeting dates to discuss Convention Center Hotel
rent contribution to Educational Enhancements meeting scheduled for April 17 at 9:30
am in the CMB Large
8. Medical Marijuana shops discussed at Feb. Commission meeting motion 1,200 foot
distance and smoke shop on 41st street land use meeting April 2019 discussed and
motions passed:

Motion Text:
The Miami Beach Committee for Quality Education requests the Miami Beach Commission to restrict any establishments
that sell tobacco and smoke products and/or paraphernalia and accessories to be located more than 300 feet from schools
and that 41st street be designated a prohibition zone with no waiver/variance provisions.

The Miami Beach Committee for Quality Education requests the Miami Beach Commission to establish a minimum 1200
foot distance separation requirement between businesses that have more than 50% of their sales from tobacco and other
smoke products and related paraphernalia and accessories.
The Committee for Quality Education urges the Mayor and Commission to support the above request.
