Finalists for 2003 Artist-in-Residency Pilot Program
Miami Beach, Fla.,- (June x, 2003) -The City of Miami Beach's Cultural Arts Council
selected nine finalists to participate in the new 2003 Artist-in-Residency Pilot Program
this summer. These artists, whose project selections were based on artistic quality and
originality, will take up residency on July 17.
"'We're pleased that 27 very diverse candidates from around the world responded to this
new program," said Nancy Wolcott, chair, Cultural Arts Council (CAG). "It's wonderful to
see the variety of styles and the body of work these artists have created." The nine
chosen artists are scheduled to live and work in Miami Beach from July 17 through Aug.
29 as part of the city's continuing efforts to further develop and nurture artistic
expression in Miami Beach.
With exhibitions ranging from locations such as Abaco in The Bahamas to Denver,
Colo., and San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Berlin, the future Miami Beach residents' works
- represent an array of media including quilts, photography, ceramics and painting.
The selected artists are as follows: Marina del Rosario Huang, Brooklyn, New York;
Stephen Savage, Mobile, Ala.; Patricia Tobin, Sarasota, Fla.; Uudmila Uspenskaya, New
York; Sigrid Sarda, Rhinebeck, New York; Ernest Lopez, Waterbury, Conn.; Sarah

artists. It concludes with a juried exhibition called, "Created in Miami Beach." Artists will
receive room, working space, an opportunity to exhibit their works and establish contacts
with Miami Beach artists and arts organizations.
"'We appreciate the energies of everyone involved in making this pilot program a reality,
including Mera Ruben, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Miami
Beach Visitor and Convention Authority, Greater Miami and the Beaches Hotel
Association. Miami Beach Art in Public Places and Miami Beach city officials." said
Wolcott.
