OPERATION BOARDWALK
Date: August 18, 2003
This Letter to the Commission is to provide information on Operation Boardwalk. This was
a proactive enforcement task force targeting the recent trend of robberies occurring on the
Boardwalk. The Task Force is providing coverage on the Boardwalk from 8:00 a.m. until
3:00 a.m. during the next week. The Crime Prevention Unit is also doing a security survey
to address the quality of life issues facing the Boardwalk and will be requesting assistance
from Property Management and Sanitation Departments to improve the physical condition
of the Boardwalk. The Armor Security hours of operation are also being re-evaluated.
During the first weekend Operation Boardwalk was in place, suspects were identified and
arrested before they could do further harm. The suspects were charged with two separate
Armed Robberies with a firearm. It must be pointed out that the robbery suspects are not
homeless individuals. While officers will be continuing to encourage homeless individuals
to leave the Boardwalk area, most refuse assistance and are well aware of their right to be
on the Boardwalk. Unless the vagrants are violating a State law or City ordinance, they
can not be arrested.
