TRITON TOWERS SIDEWALK
Date: September 4, 2003
On August 21,2003, the Triton Towers Condominium Association conducted a meeting to discuss City related
issues. At the time the invitation was received, Administrative staff believed that the 29th Street beach
bathroom site and noise were the issues of concern. The meeting invitation was also extended to the Mayor
and City Commission.
Assistant City Manager Robert Middaugh, Planning Director Jorge Gomez, Planning and Zoning Manager
Richard Lorber and Principal Planner Mercedes Lamazares attended the meeting on behalf of the
Administration. Commissioners Garcia, Gross, Bower and Cruz attended on behalf of the City Commission.
At the meeting, a number of issues and questions were raised by residents. It was agreed by those present
that a follow up meeting that included a broader representation of departments would be very helpful to more
fully address the range of issues that were raised.
One item that was raised at the meeting concerned the existing condition of and plan for future development
of the street end east of Collins on 29th Street. The concern expressed was that the area needed to be more
tidy and that a missing piece of sidewalk presented an ADA access issue to many of the residents.
As a result of the meeting at Triton Towers and a subsequent site inspection, the City will be constructing a
sidewalk connection from the current street end to the boardwalk. The residents concerns were very well
directed and there is a legitimate ADA issue that the City should address. Even though the street end will
receive more attention and improvements as a part of the CIP neighborhood program, the ADA access issue
is good cause to accelerate the construction of the short connecting and missing sidewalk piece.
Construction is scheduled for this Monday, September 8, 2003 and baring bad weather will be done in a few
days. After the sidewalk is completed the City will add some plant material to the area to help clean it up and
improve the appearance as it is an access to the beach for the general area.
The end product will be a big improvement to the area in the short term with more to follow in the CIP
improvement process in the future.
If you have questions, please do not hesitate to call me.
