Resolution 2019-31035 RESOLUTION NO. 2019-31035 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ACCEPTING THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE FINANCE AND CITYWIDE PROJECTS COMMITTEE AT ITS SEPTEMBER 20, 2019 MEETING, AND APPROVING THE CITY'S SPONSORSHIP OF THE WOLFSONIAN-FIU'S NOVEMBER 14, 2019 BLOCK PARTY HONORING MITCHELL WOLFSON, JR.'S 80TH BIRTHDAY (THE "EVENT"), CONSISTING OF A CASH SPONSORSHIP TO THE WOLFSONIAN-FIU IN SUPPORT OF THE EVENT, IN THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF $25,000. WHEREAS, Mitchell Wolfson, Jr. ("Micky Wolfson"), the founder of The Wolfsonian Museum in Miami Beach, Florida was born and raised in Miami Beach, Florida, is the son of a Miami Beach Commissioner and Mayor, and is an American businessman and collector; and WHEREAS, in 1986, Micky Wolfson established The Wolfsonian Foundation, a research center and museum in Miami Beach; Micky Wolfson founded The Wolfsonian in 1995, and headquartered the museum at the Washington Storage Building at 1001 Washington Avenue, with much of the collection stored locally at the Wolfsonian Annex (the former Southern Bell building) at 1538 Lenox Avenue; and WHEREAS, between 1995 and 1997, Wolfson gifted The Wolfsonian museum, including the above-referenced buildings and his collection (estimated at over 80,000 works), to the State of Florida and Florida International University, thereby creating The Wolfsonian-FIU as a university research center and museum; and since 1997, Micky Wolfson has made additional gifts and contributions in support of The Wolfsonian-FIU; and WHEREAS, as a result of Micky Wolfson's dedicated leadership and transformative gifts, Micky Wolfson has positioned The Wolfsonian-FIU in Miami Beach as one of the world's largest and most comprehensive repositories of primary source material for art, design and culture focusing on the period from 1885-1945; and WHEREAS, in celebration of Wolfson's 80th birthday and legacy, The Wolfsonian-FIU will host a block party event and launch a new exhibition, "A Universe of Things: Micky Wolfson Collects" on Thursday, November 14, 2019 (the "Event"); and WHEREAS, on September 11, 2019, at the request of Commissioner Joy Malakoff, The Wolfsonian-FIU requested a $25,000 sponsorship of the Event celebrating Micky Wolfson and his contributions to the arts and the City of Miami Beach; and WHEREAS, on September 11, 2019, the City Commission referred the review of the sponsorship to the September 20, 2019 Finance and Citywide Projects Committee ("FCWPC") for consideration; and WHEREAS, on September 20, 2019, the FCWPC recommended that the City of Miami Beach sponsor the Event, with a cash sponsorship in the total amount of$25,000. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby accept the recommendation of the Finance and Citywide Projects Committee at its September 20, 2019 meeting, and approves the City's sponsorship of the Wolfsonian-FIU November 14, 2019 block party honoring Mitchell Wolfson's 80th birthday(the "Event"), consisting of a cash sponsorship to the Wolfsonian-FIU in support of the Event, in the total amount of $25,000. RECOMMENDATION The administration recommends the Mayor and Commission approve a one time cash sponsorship in the amount of$25,000 for Micky Wolfson's 80th birthday. BACKGROUND/HISTORY Micky Wolfson was born in 1939 and attended North Beach Elementary School in Miami Beach. His father was a Miami Beach Commissioner and Mayor, and the family owned movie theatres on Miami Beach such as the Byron Carlyle, Cameo,and Lincoln. He was a former owner of the Sterling Building on Lincoln Road,established the seminal Foundlings Club, and was active in preservation and served on MDPL's first board in 1978. More recently, Micky founded The Wolfsonian in 1995. He purchased and then gifted to the State of Florida the Washington Storage Building at 1001 Washington Avenue and the Wolfsonian Annex (former Southern Bell building)at 1538 Lenox Avenue. He made the single largest gift to the State of Florida in 1997;valued at$75,0000,000. The Wolfsonian—FIU reveals the inventive and provocative character of the modern world through exhibitions,programs, and publications that delve into the museum's singular permanent collection and library. With over 200,000 objects and print media created between 1850 and 1950, The Wolfsonian considers how the modern age improved and transformed everyday life. Toasters and vacuum cleaners. ANALYSIS Page 962 of 2557 The Wolfsonian is requesting a cash sponsorship in the amount of$25,000 to cover half of the costs of their neighborhood block party, celebrating the 80th birthday of Micky Wolfson to be held on 10th street between Washington Avenue and Collins Avenue.. The event will take place on Thursday November 14, 2019 from 7pm - 11pm and will be free to all residents, and will also provide free entrance to the Wolfsonian museum and their exhibit"A Universe of Things: Micky Wolfson Collects". Entertainment to include the FIU marching band, the Nu Deco Ensemble and will be hosted by Casey DeSantis. The Washington Avenue BID will also be making a $1000 contribution to the event. Please place a referral to the Finance and Citywide Projects Committee to discuss partially funding, a block party in honor of Micky Wolfson's 80th birthday. The Wolfsonian is requesting the City to contribute$25,000 to help underwrite the$52,702 expense. Attached please find the budget and the site plan.
