A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ENDORSING
THE HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS AND ACTION
CAMPAIGN ("HTAAC") EVENT FOR MIAMI BEACH
HOTEL EMPLOYEES, WHICH WILL BE HELD ON
NOVEMBER 13, 2019 AT THE MIAMI BEACH POLICE
STATION ON 11TH STREET AND WASHINGTON AVENUE.
WHEREAS, the State of Florida is ranked third nationally in human trafficking
abuses; and
WHEREAS, human traffickers and their clients often use hotels, motels, public
lodging establishments, or property rental sharing sites as places where men, women,
and children are victimized; and
WHEREAS, this places the employees and customers of these establishments in
direct contact with victims of human trafficking; and
WHEREAS, in preparation for the Super Bowl being hosted in Miami on February
2, 2020, it is critical to prevent and deter human trafficking from happening in the City of
Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, Sharing One Love, a locally operated online hub with tools and
resources to collaboratively respond to human trafficking, recommended a Human
Trafficking Awareness and Action Campaign ("HTAAC") geared towards small to
medium-sized hotels in the City as part of a strategic collaborative human trafficking
response; and
WHEREAS, the campaign will be coordinated by the South Florida Human
Trafficking Task Force, ("SFHTTF"), a federally funded anti-trafficking coordination team
that has developed a comprehensive strategy to combat human trafficking through
coordination with non-governmental organizations and law enforcement within South
Florida; and
WHEREAS, a portion of the campaign will consist of a 3-hour long Human
Trafficking Awareness Event (the "Event") for the administrative staff of 20-30 small to
medium-sized Miami Beach hotels, which will be held at the Miami Beach Police Station,
on 11th Street and Washington Avenue, on November 13, 2019, from 9am to 12pm; and
WHEREAS, the Event will be coordinated by Sharing One Love, the Greater Miami
Beach Hotel Association, and the Miami Beach Human Rights Committee, and will be
presented by members of the SFHTTF's Outreach Committee, consisting of local human
trafficking experts, advocates and frontline providers, including members of the Miami
Beach Police Department's Human Trafficking Unit; and
WHEREAS, the Event will focus on panel and small-group discussions on how to
identify and report suspected cases of human trafficking, and connecting potential victims
of human trafficking with the help they need to be safe, and an understanding the critical
role hotels can play in helping prevent human trafficking.
WHEREAS, given the significant public purpose and benefit surrounding the
HTAAC, the Mayor and City Commission fully endorse the Human Trafficking Awareness
event for Miami Beach hotel employees, which will take place on November 13, 2019.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby endorse the Human Trafficking Awareness and Action Campaign
("HTAAC") event for Miami Beach hotel employees, which will be held on November 13,
2019, at the Miami Beach Police Station on 11th Street
and// Washington Avenue.
