A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, OPPOSING THE
REMOVAL OF CURRENT SALES TAX EXEMPTIONS FROM
CONVENTION, CONFERENCE, SEMINAR AND MEETING
REGISTRATION FEES AND CONVENTION AND TRADE
SHOW SUBLEASES FOR EXHIBITION SPACE AND
AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO TRANSMIT SUCH
OPPOSITION.
WHEREAS, Governor Lawton Chiles of the State of Florida has
called a Special Session of the Legislature to reform Florida ' s tax
system; and
WHEREAS, the proposed tax reform includes the removal of
various exemptions to the State Sales Tax; and
WHEREAS, two of the exemptions proposed for removal are
exemptions for (1) convention, conference, seminar and meeting
registration fees and (2) convention and trade show subleases for
exhibition space; and,
WHEREAS, the proposed removal of these Sales Tax exemptions
would directly and adversely impact the operations and bookings of
the Miami Beach Convention Center; and
WHEREAS, should the removal of exemptions be approved the
Miami Beach Convention Center will be at a competitive disadvantage
in the Convention and Tourism industry.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the City Commission of the
City of Miami Beach opposes the removal of the Sales Tax exemptions
for Convention, Conference, Seminar and Meeting Registration Fees
and Convention and Trade Show Subleases for Exhibition Space and
authorizes the City Manager to transmit said opposition to the
City ' s Lobbyist, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau,
the Florida Tourism Association, the Dade Delegation of the Florida
Legislature, the Miami Beach Resort Hotel Association, Senator
Patsy Kurth (Senator Chair of Tourism) and the Greater Miami
Hotel/Motel Association.
PASSED and ADOPTED this 3rd day o June , 1992 .
