A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES BILL, H.R. 2420, AND ITS
COMPANION, SENATE BILL, S. 1267, BOTH ENTITLED THE
"NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN LATINO ACT," WHICH
WILL ESTABLISH THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE
AMERICAN LATINO IN THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION;
URGING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO PASS THESE
COMPANION BILLS; AND DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO
TRANSMIT THIS RESOLUTION TO THE SPEAKER OF THE U.S.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE MAJORITY LEADER OF
THE U.S. SENATE, AND TO EACH FLORIDA SENATOR AND
REPRESENTATIVE IN THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS.
WHEREAS, on April 30, 2019, the United States House of Representatives introduced a
bill, H.R. 2420, entitled the"National Museum of the American Latino Act" (the "Act"), which would
establish the National Museum of the American Latino (the "Museum") in the Smithsonian
Institution; and
WHEREAS, the United States Senate version of H.R. 2420, Senate Bill S. 1267, also
entitled the "National Museum of the American Latino Act" and identical in substance, was
introduced to the Senate on the same date; and
WHEREAS, these companion bills would designate a site on the National Mall in
Washington, D.C. as the future location for the Smithsonian American Latino Museum, secure a
50/50 public and private funding model, and begin the planning for fundraising, construction, and
governance of the Museum; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of the Museum would be to (1) illuminate Latino contributions to
the story of the United States; (2) provide for the collection, study, research, publication, and
establishment of exhibitions and programs related to Latino life, art, history, and culture; and (3)
provide for collaboration with Smithsonian Institution museums and research centers and other
museums and educational institutions in the United States and abroad to promote the study and
appreciation of Latino life, art, history, culture, and its impact on society in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach's (the"City") commitment to the arts, to the principles
of diversity, and to building a more inclusive community recognizes and appreciates that the
Latino community is vital to American life, art, culture, and industry, as well as our neighborhoods
and communities; and
WHEREAS, the City desires to support the establishment of the proposed Museum on the
National Mall in Washington D.C. to highlight the history, contributions and successes of the
Latino community, the largest demographic minority population in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the City wishes to encourage the creation of the Smithsonian American Latino
Museum, through its support of H. R. 2420 and S. 1267, to honor Latinos and their significant
contributions to our culture and society.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby express support for House of Representatives bill, H.R. 2420, and its
companion, Senate bill, S. 1267, both entitled the "National Museum of American Latino Act,"
which will establish the National Museum of the American Latino in the Smithsonian Institution;
urge the United States Congress to pass these companion bills; and direct the City Clerk to
transmit this Resolution to the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Majority Leader
of the U.S. Senate, and to each Florida Senator and Representative in the United States
Congress. /
