We have met several times with Sgt. Andy Soto and once with Officer Jim Hyde re this program. We feel strongly that it will reinforce the DARE message so effectively taught by Officer Ellen Knight and our sixth grade teachers. We look forward to participating in both training and orientation for this program. If funded, one of our physical education teachers, Gary Bond, will be working each afternoon Monday through Thursday with the assigned DARE officer(s) and the volunteers from the Police Athletic League. He will not be available to assist this group on Fridays, but the school office will be open and phones, etc. will be available as well as a "homework" room. It is our understanding that any child who participates will have a signed permission form from their parents and that sports as well as homework will be stressed. Our children are latch-key kids and no program could be more effective for their well-being than one like this where police officers and volunteers become friends and role models where none exist. The sports activities will fill a serious void in their after school lives. We anxiously await information regarding funding.
