A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING
AND ENCOURAGING THE METROPOLITAN PLANNING
ORGANIZATION TO RETAIN THE ORIGINAL DESIGN OF
THE MACARTHUR CAUSEWAY BRIDGE AS THE MOST
EFFECTIVE PROCESS FOR ACCOMPLISHING THE
PROJECT WITHOUT DELAY AND WITHIN FUNDS
AVAILABLE, AND EXPRESSING APPRECIATION FOR
METROPOLITAN DADE COUNTY VICE CHAIRMAN MAURICE
FERRE'S INTEREST AND CONCERN FOR THE MACARTHUR
CAUSEWAY BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION PROJECT AESTHETIC
ISSUES.
WHEREAS, the contract for the construction of the MacArthur
Causeway Bridge has been bid by the Florida Department of
Transportation with a two year completion time at a total cost
approximating $30 million; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Planning Organization is scheduled
to meet on June 17 , 1993 for the purposes of discussing possible
design changes to the bridge, as suggested by Metropolitan Dade
County Vice Chairman Maurice Ferre; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission wish to express their
appreciation to Vice Chairman Ferre for his interest in ensuring
excellent design for the new bridge serving users of the MacArthur
Causeway; and
WHEREAS, having considered various alternatives, as well as
recognizing the long overdue need for construction of the new
bridge, the Mayor and City Commission hereby endorse the design as
contracted by the Florida Department of Transportation as the most
effective manner of accomplishing the stated project and in an
effort to avoid any further project delay urge the Metropolitan
Planning Organization to reject any further design changes to the
MacArthur Causeway Bridge.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that it hereby
expresses its appreciation for Metropolitan Dade County Vice
Chairman Maurice Ferre ' s concern for the design of the MacArthur
Causeway Bridge Construction Project and further, after due
consideration, recommends that the Metropolitan Planning
Organization retain the original design of the MacArthur Causeway
Bridge to ensure timely completion of the project.
