HIRING TI~EELINE FOR POLICE OFFICER APPLICANTS
This Letter to the Commission is to advise the Mayor and City Commission of the hiring status for
police officer applicants.
We are budgeted for 378 sworn positions and as of February 1, 1999, we will have 355 actual
positions filled.
On two consecutive Saturdays, December 12 and 19, 1998 the physical ability test (PAT) was
conducted at the Criminal Justice Institute, Miami-Dade Community College, North Campus. We
tested 234 applicants from a qualified non-certified pool.
Those applicants who successfully pass the physical ability test will be administered the final test,
the Behavioral Assessment Test (BAT). The BAT will be conducted the second week of February
1999. The exact date is not known at this time as the Human Resources Department is working with
the Miami Beach Convention Center to determine the availability of space for conducting the
examination. At the completion of the Behavioral Assessment Test, the Human Resources
Department will receive a ranked list from the test consultant. The ranked list will be active for two
years.
We anticipate a police academy class to begin in April 1999. The police academy program is 23
weeks in length. Upon successful completion of the police academy, the new police officers will
receive a 3-week orientation and then enter the 14-week FTO program. We anticipate assignment
to patrol duties in January 2000.
The Police Department is completing the background investigations on the final list of certified
officers. We anticipate hiring six certified officers by February 1,1999. This will bring our total to
fifteen certified officers hired off the list of 66 eligible candidates.
In summary, the remaining 25-30 vacancies will be filled from the non-certified list of applicants and
they will not be available for regular patrol duties until January 2000.
