U~TManagj~nu~~C~BRENOURiSHMENT AND MAINTENANCE COSTS FROM MIAMI-
DADE COUNTY TO BEACHFRONT MUNICIPALITIES.
The next meeting of the Miami-Dade County Beach Erosion Control and Maintenance Task Force has been scheduled
for 10:00 am on Friday February 5, 1999, at the Sunny Isles Beach Resort Association offices. The purpose of the
meeting will be to review the County's revised proposals for the establishment of a dedicated funding source for on-
going beach renourishment and maintenance costs.
The County's original potential funding scenarios proposed the imposition of new taxes upon the beachfront
municipalities to generate the revenues needed for beach renourishment and maintenance. On November 18, 1998,
the City Commission passed Resolution No. 98-22977 opposing the County's proposed funding plan and declaring
the imposition of additional taxes on the beachfront municipalities unfair. At the last Task Force meeting on December
10, 1998, the municipal representatives voted unanimously to reject the County' s proposal and directed the County' s
representatives to find other funding alternatives which would not unfairly burden the coastal municipalities.
On January 15, 1999, the County distributed its revised funding scenarios proposal to the Task Force members. The
revised proposal still calls for the imposition of additional taxes on the coastal municipalities to pay a
disproportionately large share of the beach renourishment and maintenance costs. City representatives will attend the
next scheduled meeting and continue to voice the City's opposition to the County's funding proposal.
