Combined with the planting of new natives, the dune will encourage the return of local bird, butterfly and other native animal species creating a more diverse, healthy, resilient ecosystem; and -promote Environmental Stewardship among youth/school groups who will be guided through the restoration activity and educated about the dune& beach environment and its importance to society. Benefits beyond two cited Priority areas: -Sea level rise &storm protection: Healthy dunes provide the first line of defense for upland property; and -Set the example for Florida friendly/Ocean friendly landscaping practices PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Surfrider proposes to plan, organize, promote and conduct five dune restoration projects over a one year period beginning February 1, 2020. Two of the five will include a planting component. Surfrider will provide tools, guidance and education to local volunteers who will methodically remove invasive scaevola from the beach dunes while being careful not to damage native plants currently existing in the dune. Simultaneously, all litter will be cleaned from the dune. In cleared areas with most need, native species will be planted with guidance from a local qualified professional. These plants will be chosen based on City of Miami Beach's native plant guidelines and sourced locally. Initial irrigation will be provided for new plantings and ongoing watering will be coordinated with the City until point where naturally drought-resistant plants will survive&thrive on their own. LOCATION All dune restoration activity will take place on the beach dunes along City of Miami Beach's Eastern, oceanfront boundary. The specific project areas will be chosen based on guidance from the City's Environment and Sustainability Department on areas needing work. During the projects, the activities will take place within the dunes themselves, along the ocean/East side of the dune where volunteers, tools, etc will be staged and the street/West side of dune where removed plant matter and litter will be placed for removal by the City's Sanitation Department. GRANT ACTIVITIES (Include activity name, activity description, description of service recipients, and number of service recipients) Activity Name: Dune Restoration Activity Description: Volunteers will be guided in the safe removal of invasive plant species& litter and the planting of native plant species. Page 16 GOALS/OUTCOMES (Include outcomes, measures, and targets) Large swaths of Miami Beach dunes are covered with invasive scaevola which dominates the dune, crowds out native plant species, and prevents the sun from reaching the ground, where native seed banks are dormant waiting for the sunlight to reach the soil. Measures: The projects will work to address City block sections of dunes to be specifically designed in consultation with City's Environment and Sustainability Department. Target: All sections of dune along Lummus Park between 5th Street on the South and 14th Place on the North. STAFFING (Include position title and description/responsibilities to grant program) Staffing will consist of Surfrider executuive committee members along with active Surfrider members.
