Resolution 2020-31425 RESOLUTION NO. 2020-31425 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DECLARING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2020 AS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IN THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH. WHEREAS, except for skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the United States; and WHEREAS, in 2020 alone, it is estimated that approximately 279,100 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 48,530 new cases of carcinoma in situ, a non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer, will be diagnosed in women; and WHEREAS, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign promoted by leading nonprofit and government agencies to increase awareness of the disease; and WHEREAS, the City desires to recognize and proclaim the month of October 2020 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Miami Beach, and WHEREAS, increasing the public's knowledge about the importance of early detection of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment can save lives; and WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness month is an opportunity to unite all citizens in our community to prevent breast cancer deaths through increased education and regular screening; and WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society organizes annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer ("MSABC") Walk across the country in celebration of survivorship, an occasion to express hope and a shared goal to end a disease that threatens the lives of so many people we love; and WHEREAS, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk raises money for breast cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient services, with all proceeds sourced solely toward breast cancer funding; and WHEREAS, while Breast Cancer Awareness Month will be celebrated differently this year, with in-person events cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mayor and City Commission encourage Miami Beach residents to partake in organized virtual events and other fundraising opportunities. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and the City hereby declare the month of October 2020 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month ink the CityofMiami Beach.
