A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DECLARING THE ONE-MONTH
PERIOD BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 15, 2020, AND ENDING
OCTOBER 15, 2020 AS "HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH" IN THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH
WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month runs each year from September 15 through
October 15, and celebrates the accomplishments of Hispanic Americans, who have
enriched our culture and society and helped make United States of America into the
incredible country it is today; and
WHEREAS, in 1968, the U.S. Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson
to proclaim a week in September as National Hispanic Heritage Week, and the
observance was subsequently expanded in 1988 to a month-long celebration, September
15 through October 15; and
WHEREAS, September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration
because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries — Costa
Rice, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua; and
WHEREAS, the Bureau of the Census estimates the Hispanic population living in
the continental United States at over 59,000,000, plus an additional 3,300,000 living in
the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, making Hispanic Americans 18 percent of the total
population of the United States and the largest racial or ethnic minority group in the United
States; and
WHEREAS, the Latino population in the United States is currently the third largest
worldwide, exceeding the size of the population in every Latin American and Caribbean
country except Mexico and Brazil; and
WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month is particularly special to Miami Beach and
the Greater Miami area —today, 59% of Greater Miami's population is of Hispanic origin,
with numbers of more than one million; and
WHEREAS, Latinos in our communities occupy positions of great responsibility in
business, labor, government, science and technology, education, religion, the arts and
entertainment; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of the achievements and contributions of the Hispanic
and Latino community, the City of Miami Beach hosts an annual Hispanic Heritage Month
and holds events throughout the month promote a celebration of Hispanic culture in our
City.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that the Mayor and the City
hereby declare the one-month period beginning September 15, 2020, and ending October
15, 2020, as "Hispanic Heritage Month" in the City of Miami Beach.
