Resolution 2020-31454R E S O L U T IO N NO . 2020-31454 A R E S O L U T IO N O F T H E M A Y O R A N D C IT Y C O M M IS S IO N O F M IA M I B E A C H , FLO R ID A , R E Q U E S T IN G T H E FL O R ID A D E P A R TM E N T O F T RA N S P O R T A T IO N T O EN A C T A SA FE D R IV IN G C A M P A IG N IN TH E M O N T H O F O C T O B E R FO R SC H O O L Y E A R 2020-2021. W H E R E A S , at its September 22, 2020 meeting, the Committee for Quality Education unanimously passed a motion requesting the Mayor and City Commission to reach out to the Florida Department of Transportation ("FDOT") to hold a safe driving campaign starting in October 2020 to align with the re-opening of public schools; and WHEREAS, every month, the fdot hosts safety campaigns to promote driver safety and bring light to persistent problems affecting Florida drivers and residents; and WHEREAS, while back-to-school routines and travel schedules may look a bit different this year, it is more important than ever to be mindful of safety of our children; and WHEREAS, it is critical for adults to always model safe driving behaviors to instill good habits for future drivers and reduce the number of fatalities on our roadways; and WHEREAS, preliminarily in 2019, there were 127,285 children age O to 17 involved in a crash in Florida resulting in 1,361 serious bodily injuries and 142 fatalities; and WHEREAS, as children travel to and from school or just biking around the neighborhood, motorists must ensure they arrive safely by obeying school zone speed limits, remaining attentive around child pedestrians and bicyclists, and properly stopping for school buses. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DUL Y RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby request the Florida Department of Transportation to enact a safe driving campaign in the month of October for school year 2020-2021.
