COMMITTEE FOR QUALITY EDUCATION Minutes 9.22.20 COMMITTEE FOR QUALITY EDUCATION City of Miami Beach Tuesday, September 22,2020 9:00am-11:00am _________________________ MINUTES ____________________________ “ Members Present: Mary Keinath, Joshua Levy, Elisheva Rogoff, Judith Berson- Levinson, Tiffany Heckler, Karen Edelstein, Rachel Weissman, Beverly Heller, Jamie Adams, Ivan Alvarez, Karen Latham, and Lauren Cantor Members Absent: Jordan Leonard Motion 1 Made by Beverly Heller Second by Elisheva Rogoff The Committee for Quality Education requests the Mayor and City Commission reach out to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to have a safe driving campaign starting in October 2020 to align with the reopening of public schools. The Committee for Quality Education urges the Mayor and Commission to support the above request. Motion Passage: Votes 13-0 Motion 2 Made by Joshua Levy Second by Beverly Heller The Committee for Quality Education requests the Mayor and City Commission help support City of Miami Beach public schools by sharing each school reopening plan with the Miami Beach community. The Committee for Quality Education urges the Mayor and Commission to support the above request. Motion Passage: Votes 12-1 (Karen Latham) Motion 3 Made by Karen Latham Second by Elisheva Rogoff The Committee for Quality Education requests the Mayor and City Commission provide targeted outreach on recommended masks for school use and parent led student screening processes. The Committee for Quality Education urges the Mayor and Commission to support the above request. Motion Passage: Votes 13-0 Members agreed to hold all upcoming meetings via Zoom for the 2020-21 year. Education Compact 1. Safety / Traffic • Miami Beach Police in Schools R&R - Chief Rick Clements attended and provided update on support for reopening of school facilities • School capacity with CDC guidelines for students discussed • Contact tracing discussed • PPE at schools discussed • Little Kids Rock infusion (new instruments, teacher training, etc..) in 2020-21 partnership discussed • FDOT update of 41st discussed with Josiel Ferrer providing delay information • FDOT Back to School safe driving campaign motion made 2. Communication • PTA’s reminded to send in meeting info for public noticing • Feeder Pattern Update provided • Sub-committee next meeting November 2020 reminder 3. Student Achievement • STEAM Partnerships discussed • List of partners working with each schools to be provided once agreement is executed • Afterschool enrichment Biscayne, Fienberg, MBSH update provided • MDCPS high school internships at city hall discussed • ADL in 2020-21 agreement routed for MDCPS signature 4. Parental Involvement/Family Support/Youth and Community Engagement • Pre-Kindergarten Pilot Program update provided • GED and ESOL city funded classes update provided and flyer • Field use at South Pointe Elementary and MBSH. Biscayne Beach field update and community access pending MDCPS return of signed agreements 7.
