Reviewed and approved minutes from April meeting
Discussed partnership with SPE/MDCPS basketball courts – agreement with MDCPS
Discussed vaping efforts
1. Items discussed from prior Commission and committee meetings:
a. Early childhood referral to Finance
b. Motion to request support no funds for MBSH beautification project
c. Discussed Resolution 2020-31266 – Urging MDCPS to develop plan for the final
marking period pertaining to academic performance that would account for student
stress levels, learning environments and obligations during this unprecedented
global pandemic (Sponsored by Vice-Mayor Micky Steinberg) – unanimously
passed May 13, 2020
2. Updated members on Mental Health Support through CMB partnership with Borinquen
telephonic
3. Provided information on Prepworks SAT/ACT/PSAT summer program access and
parental informational session on May 20
4. Discussed paid summer internships (remote) for high school students
5. Reviewed Info Piece for CMB Real Estate Market update
6. Discussed Meal Distributions in Miami Beach
7. Reviewed Educational Enhancement task force meeting May 15 2020 –
a. Change 100% attendance rule to help decrease infection
b. Sustain MDCPS issued mobile devices for all
c. Sustain STEAM activations through live virtual sessions (not recorded) if
applicable

d. Sustain all existing educational enhancements to ensure access for all in Miami
Beach
e. Explore need for tech support for teacher through college P/T students to ensure
effective virtual classroom sessions for all by reallocating no more than 20% of
reading and math interventionists funding

sustain STEAM Plus initiative live virtual sessions (if applicable) and not pre-recorded
sessions.
The Committee for Quality Education urges the Mayor and Commission to support the above
request.

sustain all existing educational enhancements in FY 2021 to ensure Miami Beach youth pre-K
to 12 receive the best public educational opportunities.
The Committee for Quality Education urges the Mayor and Commission to support the above
request.

The Miami Beach Committee for Quality Education requests the Mayor and City Commission
ensure the Referendum Re: Use of Rent Payments received by the City of Miami Beach from
Convention Center Hotel Lease approved by 79.5% of Miami Beach voters on November 6,
2018 earmarked for education be allocated only to Fund 177 Education Compact and be used
solely for Miami Beach public educational initiatives. (Referendum: If voters approve City’s
Convention Center Hotel lease with MB Mixed Use Investment, LLC, shall the City adopt an
ordinance dedicating the Hotel’s guaranteed rent payments received by the City, to enhance
funding, in equal portions annually, for: Stormwater projects (in lieu of rate increases), traffic
reduction measures, and education, with any amendment of such ordinance subject to
supermajority (5/7th) City Commission approval?)
The Committee for Quality Education urges the Mayor and Commission to support the above
request.

The Miami Beach Committee for Quality Education requests the Mayor and City Commission
explore the need for technology support for Miami Beach public school teachers through
support from college students to ensure effective virtual classroom sessions by reallocating no
more than 20% of reading and math interventionists existing funding.
Committee for Quality Education urges the Mayor and Commission to support the above
request.
