Miami Beach Receives 2020 LEED for Cities and Communities Grant
—Including Educational Resources and Technical Support to Pursue LEED Certification—
Miami Beach, FL – The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has announced that the City of
Miami Beach is among 20 cities and counties selected to participate in the 2020 LEED for Cities
and Communities grant program. The grant program, created by USGBC with support from the
Bank of America Charitable Foundation, provides recipients with technical support and
educational resources to assist cities through the LEED certification process.
“Miami Beach has the strongest Green Building Ordinance in the State, where new construction
over 7,000 square feet is required to be LEED Gold or Living Building Challenge certified,” said
Commissioner Micky Steinberg. “This grant will help the city accelerate its progress on climate
change mitigation and build a more resilient community.”
The LEED for Cities and Communities rating system measures the performance of social,
economic and environmental conditions citywide across six LEED credit categories. Through
the certification process, communities can hone metrics around initiatives; benchmark
performance relative to peers; and communicate to and educate stakeholders on progress.
The city will use the certification results to inform the development and enhancement of
programs and policies to mitigate the effects of climate change using the supporting data and
benchmarking metrics as important factors in their data-driven decision-making process.
“The City of Miami Beach is excited to work towards LEED for Cities and Communities
certification,” added Steinberg.
