As Restaurants Open, Select Miami Beach Streets
Will Close to Vehicles
—Allowing for Expanded Outdoor Seating & More Active Space for Pedestrians—
Miami Beach, FL – Starting next week, several Miami Beach roadways will partially or
fully close so that restaurants mandated to reduce their capacity by 50 percent may
place their displaced tables and chairs on the streets and sidewalks to comply with
social distancing guidelines. This measure will also activate additional space for walkers,
joggers, cyclists, skaters and other outdoor activities.
“We’re excited to expand our streets and afford restaurants the option to create outdoor
dining experiences that will respect social distancing guidelines,” said Mayor Dan
Gelber. “The prioritization of pedestrians over cars will also create more active
promenades for residents and visitors to enjoy our beautiful city.”
The list of street closures approved by Miami-Dade County includes:
• Washington Avenue between 7 Street and 16 Street – Full closure of road to
support expansion. Restaurants can expand using the existing sidewalks,
parking lanes, and outside travel lanes (northbound and southbound). The inside
travel lanes will be dedicated to pedestrians, bikes and for emergency vehicle
access. Delivery access will occur from each side street via dedicated loading
zones. Delivery personnel will use hand-dollies to access the businesses through
Collins Court (alleyway east of Washington Avenue) or the pedestrian path on
the inside lane.
• Ocean Drive from 5 Street to 15 Street – Full closure of Ocean Drive to support
expansion. Restaurants can expand using the existing west sidewalk, parking
lanes and southbound lane. The northbound travel lane and east side parking
lane will be dedicated to pedestrians, bikes and for emergency vehicle access.
Delivery access will occur from each side street via dedicated loading zones.
Delivery personnel will use hand-dollies to access the businesses through Ocean
Court (alleyway west of Ocean Drive) or the pedestrian path on the northbound
lane.
Ocean Drive has been closed since May 16 and Washington Avenue will close on
Tuesday, May 26. Other closures on the following roads will occur as restaurants apply
for the Recovery Outdoor Seating Pilot Program:
• Bay Road from 18 Street to 20 Street – Closure of the west side parking lane
and southbound travel lane to support expansion. Northbound traffic and access
