Resolution 2020-31467 RESOLUTION NO. 2020-31467 RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ACCEPTING THE MOTIONS MADE BY THE YOUTH COMMISSION AT ITS SEPTEMBER 22, 2020 MEETING, AND TAKING THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS: (1) REQUESTING MIAMI- DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD TO INCORPORATE LOCAL MIAMI BEACH HISTORY WITH EMPHASIS ON CONTRIBUTIONS MADE BY BLACK, JEWISH, HISPANIC, AND LGBTQ COMMUNITY MEMBERS INTO THE CURRICULUM OF THE MIAMI BEACH PUBLIC SCHOOLS; (2) DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO REACH OUT TO FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY TO SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF SUCH CURRICULUM; (3) DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO UTILIZE MIAMI BEACH VISUAL MEMOIRS PROJECTS AND DEVELOP A PROGRAM AVAILABLE TO THE YOUTH TO PARTICIPATE IN AND LEARN ABOUT LOCAL MIAMI BEACH HISTORY; AND (4) DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO COME BACK TO THE CITY COMMISSION MEETING WITH FINANCIAL OPTIONS REGARDING THE ACTIONS ABOVE. WHEREAS, in September 2016, the City of Miami Beach Youth Commission was designated to provide the youth of Miami Beach with a vehicle to learn about government, participate in the process of City government, represent and articulate the needs of youth in the City, and provide recommendations to the Mayor and City Commissioners on issues and programs affecting the youth and teen population in the City; and WHEREAS, at its September 22, 2020 meeting, the Youth Commission unanimously passed two (2) motions requesting support for a mask use campaign targeting youth, and requesting inclusion of local Miami Beach history in public schools' curriculum; and WHEREAS, specifically, the Youth Commission requested the Mayor and City Commission to implement a community outreach program to share local Miami Beach history emphasizing contributions made by Black, Jewish, and LGBTQ community members to educate youth of Miami Beach, and to request the School Board of Miami Dade County Public Schools ("MDCPS") to teach local history with emphasis on the contributions of the aforestated communities within Miami Beach public schools as part of the curriculum; and WHEREAS, at the October 14, 2020 City Commission meeting, a motion was made to adopt the Youth Commission's resolution, as amended, to include contributions of Hispanic community members as a fourth category to encompass all minorities; and WHEREAS, as such, the Mayor and City Commission direct the City Administration to request MDCPS to incorporate local Miami Beach history with emphasis on contributions made by Black, Jewish, Hispanic, and LGBTQ community members into the curriculum at Miami-Dade public schools located on Miami Beach; and WHEREAS, the City Administration is further directed to explore ways to create such curriculum with assistance of the Florida International University, to be utilized by Miami Beach public schools; and WHEREAS, the City Administration is further directed to support the development of a virtual series available to the youth to participate in and learn about local history and to return to the City Commission to provide options for the virtual series and any funding required to create and implement the aforestated virtual series. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby accept the motions made by the Youth Commission at its September 22, 2020 meeting, andtake the following actions: (1) requesting Miami-Dade County School Board to incorporate local Miami Beach history with emphasis on contributions made by Black, Jewish, Hispanic, and LGBTQ community members into the curriculum of the Miami Beach public schools; (2) directing the City Administration to reach out to Florida.International University to support development of such:curriculum; (3)directing the City.Administration to utilize Miami Beach visual memoirs projectsand develop a program available to the youth to participate in and learn about local Miami Beach history; and (4) directing the City Administration to return to the City Commission with to provide financial options regarding the actions above. • PASSED and ADOPTED THIS day of OCi ber 2020.
