POTENTIAL SITE FOR A FIRST CLASS SUPERMARKET IN NORTH BEACH
In response to Commissioner Steinberg's inquiry, as it relates to a potential site for a
supermarket in North Beach, we have continued to have conversations with Paradise
Developers who is the principal local contact for Publix, representatives from Sedanos and
recent contact from representatives from Whole Foods Market.
Publix had initiated a conversation with Charter Communications for the site on west end of
Normandy right before North bay Village. The site was too small and contacted the
adjacent property owner who was not cooperative but they continue to pursue these
discussions.
We are also including the 6600 Collins Avenue site in our Parking Alternatives Analysis,
expected by month end November, specifically looking a constructing a parking garage and
grocery store. We have also met with the property owner (Mr. Sport) who is interested in
partnering or selling the land. He has had discussions with Sedanos directly and Publix
has indicated the site may be too close to their existing site. Whole Foods is also
contacting Mr. Sport to evaluate the economic feasibility of this site.
No other sites have been identified due to the minimum lot requirements and the difficulty
amassing that amount of land. We have shared our land analysis with all the grocery store
chains and advised of ability to potential to provide incentives i.e. parking assistance.
Additionally, Tino Herran, a representative from Sedano's has met with Planning staff to
review the zoning on the 6600 Collins site. Sedanos has expressed a strong interest in the
site for a store, but also thinks a significant residential component will be required to
support the asking price. Further discussions may require the City to assist and facilitate
the negotiation process.
Staff will continue to update you on progress of ongoing discussions.
