TOURISM AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIC PLANNING
EFFORTS
As you are aware, the City recently engaged the services of the national arts-management
consulting firm, AMS Planning & Research Corp efforts to identify strategies and tools to
promote and leverage the Beach's arts and cultural facilities. The data collected has
enabled AMS to assess existing facilities and gather information from organizations
regarding key operating issues.
Concurrent with this study, the Cultural Arts Council (CAC) along with the Miami Beach
Arts Trust procured the services of Organization Advancement Associates, Inc. to complete
two studies that, together, analyzed the City of Miami Beach as an arts and cultural
destination, analyzed the Miami Beach Arts Trust's ability to raise significant private
funding, and develop a fundraising program that would compliment the efforts of the CAC.
It also describes a variety of best practices and approaches that both governments and
non-profits employ to stimulate private income.
Additionally, SMG has recently completed Strategic Marketing Plans for the Miami Beach
Convention Center and the Jackie Gleason Theater. These two plans are a requirenlent of
the Management Agreement with the City of Miami Beach, which was approved by the City
Commission on October 15, 2003.
The Tourism and Cultural Development Department will review these studies and develop
a cultural strategic plan for the City. It is the Administration's intent to share these concepts
with you in more detail at the Commission Workshop scheduled for January 8, 2004. The
workshop will also include information regarding the Tourism and Cultural Development
Department's reorganization, CAC, Fine Arts Board, and operating program for the Byron
Carlyle and Colony Theaters.
Attached are copies of the aforementioned studies for your review. Should you have any
questions, please feel free to contact me.
