SUBJECT: VISIT FROM THE CLERK OF THE HOUSE TRANSPORTATION
COMMITTEE
On April 7, 1999, Mr. John Blazey, Clerk ofthe House Transportation Committee, on behalf of the
U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Mr. Rodney Slater, will be visiting the City of Miami Beach to
review several area transportation projects including: the Electrowave shuttle project, the City's
proposed lntermodal Center, and the East/West Corridor Project.
Mr. Blazey has scheduled Wednesday, April 7,1999, at 2:00 p.m, in the Mayor's Conference Room
for a review and subsequent tour. You are invited to attend this meeting to demonstrate the
importance of federal funding support for our programs.
A pre-meeting is scheduled for March 31, 1999, at 10:30 a.m, in the City Manager's Large
Conference Room to prepare for Mr. Blazey's visit, with City staff, Transportation Management
Association staff and members of the Florida Department of Transporation,
Attached is a letter from Judy Evans, Executive Director of the Transportation Management
Association, to Mr. Blazey confirming this meeting and providing further information.

On behalf of the City of Miami Beach please accept this letter as confirmation of our
m.etlng concerning our extremely successful EL6CTROWA VE shuttle project and the plans for
development of an Intermodal Center on Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at 2:00 p.m.. The meeting
will be held at Miami Beach City Hall, 1700 Con'lention Center Drtv., Mayor's Conference Room,
4th Floor, in Miami Beach.
We afe looking forward to the opportunity to showcase our Innovative and
envIronmentally friendly ELECTROWA Vi shuttle project. The project, operated with seven
electric, 22 passenger buses (five In route service and two In rotation service) has carried over
1.69 million passengers In only 14 months of servlee. Operating over capacity 18 to 20 hours a
day within the South a.ach community (the second busiest tourtst and visitor lrea In South
Florida), the project has substantially exceeded everyone's expectations toward reducing traffic
congestion. '
The ELECTROWA VE shuttle is also considered a precursor of the rail service proposed
for South Beach, 's In alignment of the county proposed east-west multlmodal corridor project.
This corridor will Interconnect the Miami I nte matlanal Airport, downtown Miami, Miami Seaport
and Miami Beach. With the development of the proposed Intermodal Center In the South Belch
area, the center wll\.INe as I traffic collector for the arel, where commuters and visitors will
have access to parking, locallnformatlon, the shuttle and regional transit services, as well as a
usable park-and-ride program. This Intermodal Center will support the continuing success of the
!LE.CTROWAVE shuttle and serve a congested, urban-commercial and residential area, and.
national hlstortc district, which contains I convention center and Is an Intematlonal tourist
destination,
