Project title: Miami City Ballet's 2003-2004 Performances on Miami Beach Completely describe Project approved by the Grants Panel and in a separate narrative detail the revisions to the Project based upon the award. Please be as specific as possible; name of event, venue, times, etc. Miami Beach Anchors should list specifics about their mentoring program. Miami City Ballet (MCB) will use funds from the City of Miami Beach's Anchors Program to supplement costs of presenting four repertory programs plus George Balanchine's The Nutcrackerâ„¢ and "Ballet For Young People" at Jackie Gleason Theater. In addition, MCB will offer intimate "Our Show" programs in the Company's 200-seat theater. "Our Show" programs are developed and presented by MCB Dancers. Considered one of the most pure repositories of George Balanchine's choreography, MCB seeks to educate the community about the concept of a repertory and teach audiences how to experience neoclassical ballet. This season, the Balanchine style will be contrasted with pieces by choreographers working in a variety of styles, such as Twyla Tharp, Adam after Coralli and Perrot, Edward Villella and Frank Regan. All pieces are performed by MCB dancers and offered to the general public. Special group rates, discounts and complimentary programs are provided to charities and other similar community groups. MCB's 2003- 2004 Season Programming is described below: (All Programs feature 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday perfonmances and 2:00 p.m. Sunday matinees. The NutcrackerTM features and an additional 2:00 p.m. Saturday matinee and 7:30 p.m. Sunday perfonmance (evening shows are at 7:30, rather than 8:00). "Ballet for Young People" is a special Saturday matinee performance on Nov. 1. "Our Show" perfonmances will be held at 3:00 and 7:00 p.m., Feb. 21 - 22, 2004.) Program I: (Oct. 3-5) The season opens with the ebullient Allegro Brillante, of which George Balanchine once said, "contains everything I know about the classical ballet - in thirteen minutes." The ballet is set to a single movement by Tchaikovsky, the planned first movement of his never-completed third piano concerto. Also featured is Sylvia Pas de Deux, choreographed by George Balanchine in classic style to 19th century music. Tl1e program is highlighted by the World Premiere of Gismonti Brasif**, a new work by Edward Villella and Frank Regan. Gismonti Brasil incorporates classical ballet with the dance, music and colorful flare of Brasil, the country that produced so many influential styles of music, dance and artists. The program closes with the Company Premiere of Balanchine's Symphony in Three Movements" set to music by Stravinsky. Program II: (Oct. 31-Nov. 2) This program is named the Balanchine Centennial Celebration, to honor the 100111 anniversary of George Balanchine's birth. The program opens with Ballo Della Regina., whose atmosphere is pure Balanchine, womanly beauty and elegance that match the 19th century melodies extraordinarily well. The 12 ballerinas and 4 soloists are the ensemble backing the Queen, a glittering icon of command and chanm. In June 1972, Balanchine staged New York City Ballet's first festival, an intensive one-week celebration of the music of his longtime friend and collaborator, Igor Stravinsky. Of the 20 works that received their world premieres during the Festival, he choreographed eight, which included Stravinsky Violin Concerto". Stars and Stripes, featuring music by John Philip Sousa, illuminates the American spirit through the extreme strength, power and skill of its choreography. This finale is packed with grand visuals as the Company takes over the stage for a red, white and blue extravaganza. Program III: (Feb. 6-8) With intense themes of love and death, forgiveness and redemption, Giselle endures as one of the most popular ballets of 19th century Romantic repertory. Inspired by a story written by German lyrical poet, Heinrich Heine, Giselle transports the audience to an enchanted world of mystical spirits where star-crossed lovers experience the redemptive quality of love. Choreographed after Coralli and Perrot, the ballerina in the title role must be both an accomplished technician and a skilled actress showing a charming, light-hearted innocence in the first act, and a tortured, wraith-like radiance in the second. Her partner, Albrecht, must convey youthful brashness and carelessness, but also sincerely felt tenderness and regret. Program IV: (Mar. 12-14) The Company will bid farewell to Principals lliana Lopez and Franklin Gamero as they dance a final time before retirement. Featured in this program will be a Company Premiere of Balanchine's Symphony in C., Twyla Tharp's Nine Sinatra Songs", as well as the glimmering performance of "Diamonds" the third act from Balanchine's Jewels. "Diamonds" recalls the order and grandeur of Imperial Russia and the Maryinsky Theater, where Balanchine was trained, and will be perfonmed by Lopez and Gamero. George Balanchine's The Nutcrackerâ„¢: (Dec. 12-14) MCB will once again present the holiday classic George Balanchine's The Nutcrackerâ„¢, which has long been a family favorite. Each holiday season Miami City Ballet delights thousands of children with its portrayal of Marie's visit to the enchanted "Land of Sweets," a kingdom where candy canes, marzipan, snowflakes, and flowers come to life and dance for Marie and her Nutcracker Prince. * Company Premiere, "" World Premiere Page 6 of 8 Mentoring Program: Miami City Ballet (MCB) has a sincere interest in acting as a mentor organization to smaller cultural organizations in our community. Some of the ways MCB supports smaller groups is by offering our facility free-of-charge for performances (in our 200-seat Lynn and Louis Wolfson, II Theatre within the building) and rehearsal space. Last season MCB offered, free to the public, an interactive program by local yoga/meditation instructor Michael Orkin, who presented yoga and stretching techniques at an introductory level, at MCB Studios. MCB also hosted fellow grant recipients Center for Emerging Art, Inc. (CEA) and DanceNow! who performed in MCB's theatre. The Ballet mentored these groups by providing studio space for the organizations to showcase their work. While to-date no formal plans have been made for these programs during the FY04 season, MCB is open to providing these or other opportunities to organizations whenever possible. In addition, MCB is also willing to partner with smaller groups to promote their projects or programs. For example, last season MCB highly promoted the first formal performance (held at Ransom Everglades) presented by Miami Contemporary Dance Company. MCB also offers rehearsal space for the troupe on a regular basis. Exhibit 2-A: Project Budget {Revised TotafProject Budget Name of organization: Miami City Ballet. Inc.
