Culture Crawl Highlights- March 18, 2021
The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to provide the Mayor and Commission with an update on the
Miami Beach Culture Crawl season. Culture Crawl is a monthly occurrence, taking place on the third
Thursday of each month through May, from 6:00 - 9:00 PM, and offers complimentary virtual and in-
person admission to some of the nation's most prestigious institutions with unique and varied
programming, which changes each month. The Tourism and Culture department works directly with each
cultural institution, to help produce specific programming, including open studios and galleries, outdoor
films, exclusive tours, night gardens, and free trolley service throughout South Beach.
Since the relaunch of Culture Crawl on Thursday, January 21, 2021, the event has welcomed hundreds
of residents and tourists to an evening filled with diverse and exciting programming. The Thursday, March
18, 2021 Culture Crawl was no exception and featured some of the most unique and memorable
programming to date. Collins Park was the stage for the opening of Najja Moon's public sculpture entitled
Your Mommas Voice in the Back of Your Head. Commissioned by The Bass, with funding support from
the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the work configures multidirectional speakers encased in
gradient dichroic glass, echoing mantras, scolds and colloquialisms voiced by Moon's own mother, as
well as those from her friends and family.

Additionally, the City of Miami Beach hosted a sound picnic by Frozen Music in Collins Park. Entitled
Spring I, the site-specific performative sound installation played continuously from 6-9 pm. Located on
the northeast corner of Collins Park, Spring I was experienced as visitors entered The Bass, while others
brought a picnic to enjoy the piece over a longer period of time.

The Botanical Gardens invited Culture Crawl guests to honor Women's History Month with Perennial
Power: Women, Art Nature, an exhibition by the National Association of Women Artists Florida Chapter.
The Garden's gazebo featured fiber artists Krel and Veronique, who hosted a Pom-Pom & Shmata
Necklace Making Workshop: High Tea Party
Miami Beach Urban Studios re-opened at the 1618 Washington Avenue gallery space with artist and
educator Keith Allyn Spencer and FIU Intermediate and Advanced Sculpture students, who collaborated
on a new body of artwork titled Nice Fight. From a series of distanced exchanges, Spencer created
thirteen paintings to be combined onto a set of student realized sculptures, or "wall things".
In North Beach, the North Beach Social presented by the Rhythm Foundation, returned with an in-person
performance from Argentine "electro-tango-dub" composer and multi-instrumentalist Jimena Fama.
Fama played songs from her 2021 release Patagonia. The performance was hosted by Cuci Amador of
Afrobeta.
For the April 15, 2021 Culture Crawl, we invite you to join us in SoundScape Park for the opening of
Miami and Berlin-based artist GeoVanna Gonzalez's screening of HOW TO: Oh, look at me. Prioritizing
women of color, the artist's team includes a producer and cinematographer whose previous films have
premiered and won awards at major film festivals like Sundance as well as local dancers, poets, and
musicians. The video work is co-commissioned by Locust Projects and Miami Light Project.
