SUBJECT: Miami Beach Fire Rescue Cadets' Graduation Ceremony
The Miami Beach Fire Rescue Cadets will be holding their graduation on Sunday, May 16, 2021
at Miami Beach Fire Station 2 (2300 Pine Tree Drive). The graduation ceremony and certificate
presentation will commence at 10:00 a.m. The cadets will perform a fireground demonstration at
10:45 a.m. which will showcase the Fire and EMS skills they have learned.
During the 14-week training program, the ten cadets learned many skills which will help prepare
them for professional careers in the fire service, such as: physical training on land and in the
water, cadets donning and doffing structural firefighting gear, self-contained breathing apparatus,
tying knots, rope rescue, hand tools, water supply, hose management, confined space, forcible
entry, water rescues, fire boat operations, radio operations, CPR, AED, and first aid. Most
importantly, cadets were mentored in areas of mental and physical discipline, ethics, public
speaking, resume preparation, and teamwork - lessons which help them be successful in life.
The program was greatly supported by Miami Beach Fire Chief Virgil Fernandez, IAFF Local 151 O
President Adonis Garcia, and the Miami Beach Firefighter Benevolent Association. The Key
Biscayne and Hialeah Fire Departments donated structural firefighting gear to our cadets for them
to train with.
The Parks and Recreation Department and the Fire Department both utilized resources and
talented employees to build this Florida Fire Chief Association Fire Rescue Cadet Post #1510
from the ground up and look forward to its continued success. The cadet program was run and
supervised by Parks and Recreation Supervisor Gaby Avariano. The Parks and Recreation
Department was assisted by Fire Department staff who volunteered their time including Fire
Investigator Michael Sica, Lieutenant Nelson Gonzalez, Lieutenant John Hirnyk, Fire Investigator
Claudio Navas, Fire Boat Operator Ruben Rayneri, Ocean Rescue Boat Operator Alex
Anzoransia, and several other Miami Beach Firefighters who were on shift and logged many
training hours to teach our cadets. Firefighter Eddie Blanco-Herrera from the Key Biscayne Fire
Department and Firefighter David Granja from the Fort Lauderdale Fire Department also
graciously volunteered their time to work with our fire rescue cadets.
We hope you can join us in celebrating the hard work and success of these cadets as they
continue to prepare and hone their skills to become members of one of the most respected and
vital professions in the United States.
