ASSOCIATED WITH ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND DEMENTIA; URGING CITY
ADMINISTRATION TO OPERATIONALLY 'LIGHT UP' CITY HALL AND OTHER
MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS IN THE COLOR PURPLE TO BRING AWARENESS TO
ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND DEMENTIA; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS;
PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
PEMBROKE PINES, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE ALZHEIMER'S
ASSOCIATION'S 'GO PURPLE' INITIATIVE; BRINGING
ATTENTION TO THE SERIOUS RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH
ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND DEMENTIA; URGING CITY
ADMINISTRATION TO OPERATIONALLY 'LIGHT UP' CITY HALL
AND OTHER MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS IN THE COLOR PURPLE TO
BRING AWARENESS TO ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND
DEMENTIA; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; PROVIDING FOR
SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, over 580,000 Floridians have Alzheimer's disease including
43,627 people residing in Broward County; and
WHEREAS, African American and Hispanic Americans are 1.5-2 times more
likely to develop the disease than their Caucasian counterparts; and
WHEREAS, two-third (2/3) of people living with Alzheimer's disease are
women; and
WHEREAS, if all the people living with Alzheimer's disease and dementia
lived in one state, it would be the fifth highest populated state in the United States;
and
WHEREAS, the color purple symbolizes Alzheimer's disease and dementia
awareness; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission wishes to bring awareness to seriousness
of Alzheimer's disease and dementia by lighting up City Hall and other municipal
buildings with purple lights; and

W H E R E A S , the City Commission believes it is in the best interest of the City
to approve this Resolution.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES, FLORIDA, THAT:
SECTION 1. The foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are hereby ratified and
confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby incorporated herein and made
a specific part of this Resolution.
SECTION 2. The City of Pembroke Pines supports the Alzheimer's
Association 'Go Purple' initiative to bring awareness and attention to Alzheimer's
disease and dementia.
SECTION 3. The City Commission directs City Administration to light up City
Hall and other municipal buildings in the color purple to bring attention to the
seriousness of Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
SECTION 4. All resolutions inconsistent or in conflict herewith shall be and
are hereby repealed insofar as there is conflict or inconsistency.
SECTION 5. If any section, sentence, clause, or phrase of this Resolution is
held to be invalid or unconstitutional by any court of competent jurisdiction, then said
holding shall in no way affect the validity of the remaining portions of this Resolution.
SECTION 6. This Resolution shall become effective upon its passage and
adoption by the City Commission.

Action Text: A motion was made by Vice Mayor Good Jr., seconded by Commissioner Siple, to adopt Proposed
Resolution 2021-R-10 supporting the Alzheimer's Association's "Go Purple" initiative. The motion
carried by the following vote: ·

Commissioner Castillo, and Commissioner Siple

SUMMARY EXPLANATION AND BACKGROUND:
1. At the City Commission Meeting on April 7, 2021, Vice Mayor Good introduced an item for
discussion and possible motion to authorize and to direct the City Attorney's Office to draft a
resolution in support of the Alzheimer's Association's 'Go Purple' initiative intended to literally

and to figuratively shine a light on Alzheimer's disease and dementia, as an opportunity to
publicly hold a needed and necessary conversation about the human brain, and to share the
fact that this terrible disease and other dementias are a m ajor public health issue, and to also
bring attention to the serious risks associated w ith this disease which, sadly, the only leading
cause of death that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed, in these modern times.
2. The resolution, when considered and adopted, should also contain a request to the City
Adm inistration to operationally 'light up' city Hall, and other potential m unicipal buildings in the
color purple to reflect on this subject m atter, including other events and opportunities, consistent
w ith the attached, fo rmal request of the Alzheim er's Association and its members, many of
w hom live and work in the City of Pembroke Pines.
