Gonzalez '~v,~' City Manager CULTURAL ARTS COUNCIL COMMITTEE CANDIDATE Date: January 14, 2004 On December 31, 2003, six (6) seats on the Cultural Arts Council became vacant. Adhering to the guidelines set forth in the Ordinance establishing the Council, the Council's Nominating Committee met on November 13th to review applications submitted to the City Clerk's Office. An initial slate of thirteen candidates was selected from the City Clerk's list and then forwarded to the full Cultural Arts Council for approval during their November 21 st meeting. The Council approved this initial slate of 13 candidates and decided to consider any new applications received up until the date of their next meeting in December. On December 18th one of the 13 candidates withdrew their application, Mr. George Neary. On December 19th the Council met to review 10 new applications which were added to the initial slate of now 12 candidates. In order to comply with the guidelines of the Ordinance tasking the CAC to submit 3 recommended candidates to the City Commission for each of the six vacancies, the Council voted to remove four names from the list, Payola Grebor; Cheryl Jacobs, Liliam Lopez and Joy Malakoff. The Council then voted to recommend the remaining 18 candidates but subsequently one of the 18 candidates, Mr. Bill Farkas, withdrew his name, therefore, only 17 names are submitted. The Council sought input from the community in developing a slate of prospective Council members with interest and expertise in arts/entertainment; marketing, public relations, banking, legal counsel, real estate development and hotels. Pursuant to Section 2-55(d) of Ordinance No. 97-3075, as amended, establishing the Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council (Council)"vacancies on the Council shall be filled by the Mayor and City Commission. In filling any vacancy, the Mayor and City Commission may select a replacement Council member from a list of three (3) candidates which shall be submitted by the remaining members of the Council." Further, "the individual members of the City Commission may supplement the Council's suggested list with additional names of candidates or, if neither the candidates on the Council's suggested list nor the additional names submitted by the individual members of the City Commission are approved, the Council shall submit an entirely different list" for consideration.
