A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY'S TRANSPORTATION
AND MOBILITY DEPARTMENT TO WORK WITH MIAMI-DADE COUNTY
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND PUBLIC WORKS TO ASSESS
THE NEED FOR TRAFFIC CALMING INFRASTRUCTURE ON PINE TREE
DRIVE, FROM DADE BOULEVARD/23 STREET ON THE SOUTH TO 51
STREET ON THE NORTH, AS WELL AS ANY OTHER MEASURES WHICH
COULD BE IMPLEMENTED TO IMPROVE SAFETY ALONG THE CORRIDOR.
WHEREAS, Pine Tree Drive is a major collector under the jurisdiction of Miami-Dade
County; and
WHEREAS,the City of Miami Beach has worked with Miami-Dade County to initiate traffic
calming projects on Pine Tree Drive north of 41st Street, including a new crosswalk at Pine Tree
Drive and 45th Street and a proposed traffic circle on Pine Tree Drive and 46th Street; and
WHEREAS, the section of the corridor between 23rd Street and 41st Street continues to
experience high speeds and frequent accidents, including a recent fatal accident; and
WHEREAS, on April 21, 2021, the Mayor and City Commission considered Item No. R9
AC, entitled "Discuss and Take Action regarding a potential resolution of the City Commission of
the City of Miami Beach requesting that the Miami-Dade County Government conduct a traffic
study to assess the need for traffic calming infrastructure on Pine Tree Drive and assess what
kind of measures should be implemented"; and
WHEREAS,the Mayor and City Commission unanimously approved Resolution No. 2021-
31695, directing the Administration to work with the County and explore traffic'calming or other
possible solutions to the traffic issues on Pine Tree Drive from 23rd Street to 51st Street.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND THE CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby authorize the City's Transportation and Mobility Department to work with
Miami Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works to assess the need for traffic
calming infrastructure on Pine Tree Drive, from Dade Boulevard/23 Street on the south to 51
Street on the north, as well as any other measures which could be implemented to improve safety
along the corridor.

WHO WAS NOTIFIED: Chief Clements, Deputy Chief Jones, PIO, Captain
Campbell notified via telephone. Traffic management due to road closure and
notifications.
DESCRIPTION OF INCIDENT:
A vehicle was travelling south on Pinetree Drive at a high rate of speed when
another vehicle, travelling north, turned left in front of them at 34th Street. The first
vehicle lost control and struck a tree in the median. There were 4 occupants in the
vehicle: two fatalities (one was ejected) and two trauma alerts. The other
occupants were pulled from the vehicle before the vehicle caught fire. Police, Fire,
THI all responded to the scene. Both north and southbound lanes of traffic on
Pinetree are shut down pending investigation. Vehicle two did not stop at the
scene. Public Works employees and other witnesses stopped to help pull the
occupants from the vehicle before it caught fire.
