SUBJECT: Art in Public Places Committee Motions -June 15, 2021
The purpose of thi s letter to the Mayor and Commission is to provide an update regarding two
motions made during the June 15, 2021 Art in Public Place s Committee ("AIPP") meeting:
1. Creating a Public Art Walk Along Ocean Drive
Referral from May 19, 2021 Neighborhood and Quality of Life Committee
Motion to recommend staff continue to collaborate with Zyscovich Architects to integrate
public art opportunities into the Art Deco Cultural District Master Plan.
2. Creating an Outdoor Backdrop for Marriage Ceremonies and Photo Opportunities
Referral from May 19, 2021 Neighborhood and Quality of Life Committee
Motion to acknowledge that Miami Beach is home to some of the world's most beautiful
beaches, which serve as iconic backdrops to hundreds of weddings and thousands of photo
shoots each year; and further noting that the Committee appreciates the intent to be
inclusive and have an attractive feature on Miami Beach; however, the Committee
recommends that this project is considered decorative and does not align with Art in Public
Places mission to commission contemporary works of public art.
The above motions were approved unanimously. Art in Public Places Committee members
present included Marcella Novella (Chair), Florencia Jimenez-Marcos (Vice -Chair),
Michael McManus, Aaron Resnick, Esq., Dr. Yolanda Sanchez and Nick D'Annunzio.
