COMMISSION !TREAT
Date: February 9, 2004
I have had the opportunity to informally discuss with several of you the opportunity to conduct a
retreat with the Mayor and members of the City Commission in eady 2004. Bob Pamher has
confirmed Mamh 23rd & 24th as dates for the retreat.
Typically, retreats with a Mayor, City Commission and a City Manager focus on the establishment of
a specific vision for the City Commission, priorities that the City Commission would like the
Administration to pursue, how the leadership role of the City Commission can be further developed
and strengthened, and how the relationship with the Manager and the Administration can be further
developed and improved. Other subjects are certainly available to discuss and might be very
appropriate for us to pursue particularly in the first of what hopefully will become an Annual Retreat
with the Mayor and member of the City Commission.
Retreats of this nature typically use a neutral facilitator that assists in leading discussions and
keeping all of the participants appropriately focused on the topics at hand. ,Selection of the
appropriate facilitator is an important task and ideally should be a joint venture between the Mayor,
Commissioners and the City Manager so that a compatible personality with appropriate skills can be
selected to assist.
I have identified a facilitator who may be helpful for the Commission Retreat. He is a local individual
named Rick Jensen and I have attached a copy of his biography for your review and consideration.
We have contacted him to assist with the Annual Administration Retreat that will be conducted this
spring. Mr. Jensen's skills and abilities have been determined to be appropriate to the task of
conducting the Administration Retreat. For consistency between the Administration and the Mayor
and City Commission Retreats, it would be helpful~though not required~to use the same facilitator.
While members of the Administration have had a chance to meet Mr. Jensen and develop a comfort
level, it would be helpful if one or more Commissioners would avail themselves of the opportunity to
meet Mr. Jensen to assure that he is an appropriate fit for the Retreat with the Mayor and City
Commissioners. My office will coordinate opportunities to either have a phone conversation or a
personal meeting with Mr. Jensen as the Mayor and City Commissioners interest and schedules will
permit.
If Mr. Jensen is an acceptable facilitator, we can also enlist his assistance to help us develop an
agenda for the meeting.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
