Resolution 2021-31816 RESOLUTION NO. 2021-31816 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ACCEPTING THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE, AND APPROVING, BY 5/7TH VOTE, FOLLOWING A DULY NOTICED PUBLIC HEARING, THE CO- NAMING OF 22ND STREET, LOCATED BETWEEN WASHINGTON AVENUE AND COLLINS AVENUE, AS "SIMON BOLIVAR STREET." WHEREAS, on June 23, 2021, the Mayor and City Commission adopted Ordinance No. 2021-4424, which amended the criteria for the co-naming of City streets in Section 82-503(c) of the City Code; and WHEREAS, the new criteria set forth in Section 82-503(c) of the City Code provides that streets in the City may be co-named in honor of deceased historical figures who were instrumental in helping Latin American countries achieve independence from the Spanish Empire, such as SimOn Bolivar; and WHEREAS, pursuant to the request of Vice-Mayor Michael Gongora, the co-naming of 22nd Street, located between Washington Avenue and Collins Avenue, and proximate to Collins Park, as "SimOn Bolivar Street" was referred to the Neighborhood and Quality of Life Committee ("NQLC") for the Committee's consideration and review; and WHEREAS, Simon Bolivar was a Venezuelan military and political leader who was instrumental in helping Latin American countries achieve independence from the Spanish Empire; and WHEREAS, during his lifetime, Bolivar became known as "El Libertador" through helping countries such as Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, and Bolivia all achieve independence; and WHEREAS, co-naming 22nd Street, located between Washington Avenue and Collins Avenue, and proximate to Collins Park, after SimOn Bolivar would be especially fitting considering that a bust dedicated to Simon Bolivar is located in Collins Park, WHEREAS, at its July 21, 2021 meeting, the NQLC considered the request for the co-naming of 22nd Street as "SimOn Bolivar Way," and recommended in favor of the co-naming; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach, after the duly noticed public hearing on July 28, 2021, considered the co-naming request, accepted the recommendation of the NQLC, and approved the co-naming of 22nd Street, located between Washington Avenue and Collins Avenue, and proximate to Collins Park, as "Simon Bolivar" by a 5/7th vote. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby accept the recommendation of the Neighborhood/Community Affairs Committee, and approve, by 5/7th vote, following a duly noticed public hearing, the co-naming 22nd Street, located between Washington Avenue and Collins Avenue, as "Simon Bolivar Street."
