Art Week Miami Beach, November 29-December 5, 2021
The purpose of this Letter to the Commission ("L TC") is to provide you with the activation
schedule for Art Week Miami Beach 2021.
The fourth anniversary of Art Week Miami Beach will offer diverse, renowned
programming, from monumental temporary public art installations, by FriendsWithYou,
Carlos Betancourt, and the increasingly popular, Miami Beach Legacy Purchase Program
("Legacy Program").
One of the highlights of Art Week Miami Beach is the City produced and curated No
Vacancy, Miami Beach, a juried art competition that celebrates ten artists in ten of Miami
Beach's famed hotels. An equally celebrated show is Art Outside Miami Beach, a public
art exhibition initiated by The Bass Museum of Art, in collaboration with Art in Public Places
(Ai PP), which offers residents and visitors the opportunity to see and experience a network
of public artworks throughout Miami Beach, including works by Elmgreen and Dragset,
Joep Van Lieshout, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Zanele Muholi, Ugo Rondinone, Franz
Ackermann, Jim Drain, Dan Graham, Sylvie Fleury, Lawrence Weiner, Bill Fontana and
Susan Philipsz, among others.
The third edition of the Legacy Program will continue with Art Basel Miami Beach galleries
participating in the 2021 Nova and Positions sectors. The Legacy Program seeks to
strategically expand Miami Beach's public art collection by purchasing an artwork that is
reflective of our community spirit, aligns with the curatorial direction of our existing
collection, reflects international artistic excellence, and is a valuable investment to our Art
in Public Places ("AiPP") collection.
The AiPP Committee will select three art works to be offered for a public vote via online
social media channels (lnstagram, Facebook, Twitter) at approximately 8:00 pm on
Tuesday, November 30. Voting will be open for 24 hours and will close at 8:00 pm on
Wednesday, December 1. The City will announce the work(s) of art with the most votes
on Thursday, December 2, 2021.
Additionally, two temporary public art projects, commissioned through Miami Beach On
Stage!, will take place on Espanola Way. The two installations are designed to guide and
engage residents and visitors from Ocean Drive to the Drexel Avenue corridor. The artist
collective FriendsWithYou will debut Little Cloud Sky (2021) on the east end of Espanola
Way. The work was created to transport the viewer to a happy and joyful place. According
to the artists, the little aerial clouds "will travel with you everywhere you go". On the west
