A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DECLARING
DECEMBER 1, 2021 AS "WORLD AIDS DAY" IN THE CITY
OF MIAMI BEACH, AND ENCOURAGING MIAMI BEACH
RESIDENTS TO JOIN IN PLEDGING TO END
DISCRIMINATION, STIGMA AND MARGINALIZATION OF
THOSE AFFECTED.
WHEREAS, at its November 8, 2021 meeting, the City's Human Rights Advisory
Committee approved a motion requesting the Mayor and City Commission to proclaim
December 1, 2021 as "World AIDS Day" in the City of Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, every year, on December 1St, the world commemorates World AIDS Day
to show support for people living with and affected by HIV, and to remember those who lost
their lives to AIDS; and
WHEREAS, while COVID-19 pandemic has devastated communities worldwide
and remains on-going, we must not forget about HIV/AIDS, a pandemic that has been
raging for more than 40 years and remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases in
history; and
WHEREAS, we must honor more than 36 million people, including 700,000 in the
United States, who have died from AIDS-related illness globally since the start of the
epidemic; and
WHEREAS, for four (4) decades, brave individuals have fought devastating
discrimination, stigma, doubt, and violence as they stood in the face of this deadly
disease; and
WHEREAS, this year is especially poignant as it has been 40 years since the first
five cases of what later became known as AIDS were officially reported; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach recognizes the more than 38 million people
currently living with HIV and AIDS worldwide, and although we have made great strides
in the fight against HIV/AIDS, we still have a long way to go in guaranteeing prevention
and treatment for all people, and in ensuring that everyone has the ability to obtain
lifesaving medications regardless of their economic standing, and
WHEREAS, LGBTQ people in the United States and around the world continue to
be disproportionately affected by HIV and AIDS, especially Black and Latinx members of
the community due to structural and social inequalities that obstruct proven solutions to
HIV prevention and treatment; and
WHEREAS, to end the HIV epidemic, we must uplift the voices of those who have
been affected and take action to fight stigma in all aspects of our lives; and
WHEREAS, individuals living with HIV, who undergo antiretroviral therapy (ART),
can maintain an undetectable viral load and not transmit the virus, and those who are HIV
negative can protect themselves from transmission using pre -exposure prophylaxis
(PrEP), a biomedical HIV prevention method; and
WHEREAS, with early detection, proper care, and the support of compassionate
providers, people can live long and fulfilling lives because the advancements in HIV
prevention and treatment options have been significant; and
WHEREAS, ending discrimination, stigma and marginalization will result in more
persons getting tested, accessing treatment and reducing HIV transmission; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach joins the world in celebrating the
extraordinary advancements we have made in the battle against HIV and AIDS and
remembering those we have lost; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach joins other communities around the word in
this global dedication to celebrate the extraordinary advancements made in the battle
against HIV and AIDS, rememberthose lost, commit to educating people about HIV/AIDS
and fighting HIV/AIDS.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby declare December 1, 2021 as "World AIDS Day" in the City of Miami
Beach, and encourage Miami beach residents to join in pledging to end discrimination,
stigma and marginalization of those affected.
