A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, . FLORIDA, ACCEPTING THE
RECOMMENDATION OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND QUALITY OF
LIFE COMMITTEE, AT ITS SEPTEMBER 20, 2021 MEETING, AND
AUTHORIZING THE ADMINISTRATION TO ENGAGE THE
COMMUNITY THROUGH ONLINE VOTING FOR THE SELECTION OF A
PARK NAME FOR THE FUTURE 500-700 ALTON ROAD PARK.
WHEREAS, during the May 12, 2021 City Commission meeting, the Mayor and
City Commission referred to the Neighborhood and Quality of Life Committee ("NQLC")
a discussion regarding the naming of the 500-700 Alton Road Park; and
WHEREAS, the 500-700 Alton Road Park is set to open in the next few months,
and in preparation for its opening, the West Avenue Neighborhood Association
Neighborhood Association ("WAvNX) has met and provided naming suggestions for the
park, as outlined below:
• Gateway Park or South Beach Gateway Park: refers to its location at the
entrance to Miami Beach
• South Shore Park - to honor the South Shore Hospital that was the first AIDS
clinic in the State of Florida
• Sunset Park — the park faces west towards the sunset
• Tequesta Park — an acknowledgement of the original inhabitants of the region,
which is somewhat overdue and underrecognized
• West Avenue Park or West Bay Park - associates the park to a specific
neighborhood next to the Bay; and
WHEREAS, WAvNA has no preferred recommendation at this time; and
WHEREAS, additionally, during the January 10, 2019 Parks and Recreational
Facilities Advisory Board (the "Board") meeting, the Board passed a motion
recommending that the new 500-700 Alton Road Park be named "Unity Park" in
recognition of the City's culture of diversity and inclusiveness, from religious freedom, to
LGBTQ rights, to honoring residents with special needs and embracing people from
every ethnicity; and
WHEREAS, the Board also recommended that plaques with inspirational quotes
be placed throughout the park commemorating the City's commitment to its core values;
and
WHEREAS, at its September 20, 2021 meeting, the NQLC recommended polling
the community on a park name, with the following six names determined by the
Committee for consideration:
• Gateway Park
• South Beach Gateway Park
• South Shore Park
• Sunset Park
• West Avenue Park
• Unity Park; and
WHEREAS, the Administration has created a webpage for the community to visit
to place their votes and upon approval, which will remain open for voting for a period of
two weeks; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission accept the recommendation of the
NQLC, and authorize the Administration to poll the community online by providing the
following seven (7) names for consideration, along with a write-in option:
• Gateway Park
• South Beach Gateway Park
• South Shore Park
• Sunset Park
• West Avenue Park
. Canopy Park
• Unity Park; and
WHEREAS, the results of the poll will be taken back to the NQLC for their final
input, and the final naming shall be subjected to review and approval in accordance with
the City's Naming Ordinance, as set forth in Section 82-503 of the City Code, and
depending on the name selected, may require voter referendum approval, as provided
in Section 82-503(a)(6).
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby accept the recommendation of the Neighborhood and Quality of
Life Committee, at its September 20, 2021 meeting, and authorize the Administration to
engage the community through online voting for the selection of a park name for the
future 500-700 Alton Road park.

RECOMMENDATION
The City Administration recommends accepting the recommendation of the Neighborhood and
Quality of Life Committee, at its September 20, 2021 meeting, approving engaging the
community for the selection of a park name for the future 500-700 Alton Road park, by offering
online voting for the community.
BACKGROUND/HISTORY
During the May 12, 2021 City Commission meeting, a referral to the Neighborhood and Quality
of Life Committee was made to hold a discussion regarding the naming of the 500-700 Alton
Road Park. (Exhibit A)
ANALYSIS
The 500-700 Alton Road Park is set to open in the next few months. In preparation for its
opening, the West Avenue Neighborhood Association Neighborhood Association ("WAvNA")
has met and provided naming suggestions for the park, as outlined below:
• Gateway Park or South Beach Gateway Park: refers to its location at the entrance to Miami

"Board") meeting, a motion was passed recommending that the new 500-700 Alton Road Park,
at our City's primary entrance, be named "Unity Park." (Exhibit B) This is inspired by the City's
culture of diversity and inclusiveness. From religious freedom, to LGBTQ rights, to honoring
residents with special needs and embracing people from every ethnicity, the City is a beacon for
inclusion. The Board also recommended that plaques with inspirational quotes be placed

At the September 20, 2021 Neighborhood and Quality of Life Committee meeting, the

The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to inform the Mayor and Commission of the two motions
passed by the Parks and Recreational Facilities Advisory Board at its meeting on January 10, 2019:
MOTION 1:
The Parks and Recreational Facilities Advisory Board has, on multiple occasions, discussed naming a park
within our City to celebrate our culture of diversity and inclusiveness. From religious freedom, to LGBTQ rights,
to honoring residents with special needs and embracing people from every ethnlcity, our City is a beacon for
inclusion. It is in this spirit, that the Parks and Recreational Facilities Advisory Board recommends that the new
park on 500 Alton Road, at our City's primary entrance, be named UNITY PARK. We further recommend that
plaques with inspirational quotes be placed throughout the park commemorating our City's commitment to this
core value.
