WEEKLY UPDATE
Date: April 11, 2003
The purpose of this LTC is to provide the Mayor and Commission with an update
describing some of the areas the administration focused on during the week of
April 7, 2003:
Neighborhood Leadership Academy The Neighborhood Leadership
Academy, the civic and public information program designed to provide Miami
Beach residents with the information and resources to become more
knowledgeable members of our diverse community, recently started its third
class offering. Each week, various departments present to the academy an
overview of their responsibilities and services provided. The Finance, Budget
and Information Technology Departments gave their presentations on April 7.
The participant's surveys, completed at the end of each session, will be compiled
and shared with each department with a final report presented to the Mayor and
Commission.
Memorial Day 2003 - Members of the administration continued to meet
throughout the week with various city departments as well as local businesses,
hotels and nightclubs to ensure proper allocation of city services and personnel
during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. A public meeting with hotel
general managers and security staff took place on April 7, allowing the hospitality
industry to identify areas of concern and share planning efforts. On April 8,
planning efforts were also discussed at both the Miami Beach Community
Relations Board and at the Nightlife Industry Task Force meetings.
Representatives from the administration, joined by the Police Department, also
participated in non-city related meetings including the Ocean Drive Association
meeting on April 8 and a Miami-Dade County Community Relations Board
meeting on April 9, to expound on logistical planning and community outreach
efforts. Upcoming meetings include: a Visitor and Convention Authority meeting
on April 15, beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Visitor and Convention Authority
Conference Room, 555 17th Street; and two Major Events Planning (MEP)
meetings on April 16, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. in the City
Manager's Large Conference Room. A Town Hall meeting, detailing the City's
action plan to residents, is also being coordinated for May 12.
Annual Career Shadowing Day - In celebration of the 17th Annual Career
Shadowing Day, a nationwide program which allows students to "shadow" a
professional throughout their day, members of the administration and the Police
and Fire Departments served as mentors to local students on April 10. The
program helps students experience first-hand the intricacies of various careers
while promoting a comprehensive view of the contemporary workforce.
Employee Leadership and Parenting Forum - In order to help employees
achieve stronger leadership and interpersonal skills, the City held an employee
Leadership Forum on April 10. The forum, part of an innovative six-month
coaching series developed by representatives from the Human Resources
Department and the Communications Office during the '~/Vaves of Change
Customer Service Appreciation Week," provides employees with dynamic and
real life solutions to everyday work scenarios and life challenges. The program
also includes a second Family Development forum, focusing on enhancing family
relationships while instructing staff on how to develop a balance between life and
work responsibilities. All coaching forums are carried out by a professional
coaching instructor, with the schedule posted on the employee intranet. The next
Family Development Forum is scheduled for April 17, from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. in
the First Floor Conference Room.
Contract Negotiations - Members of the administration met with the Boucher
Brothers and the Market Company on April 11 to negotiate new market contracts.
Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
Filming in Miami Beach - Representatives from the administration continue to
facilitate various filming projects throughout our city. Productions filming
throughout the month of May include: Spelling Entertainment's pilot series "Hotel"
filming from April 5-7; and the major motion picture "Stuck on You," starring Matt
Damon, Greg Kinnear and Cher among others. The ABC television pilot titled
"Karen Sisco," based on the feature film "Out of Sight," wrapped filming on April
11. The "Karen Sisco" production team, recently filming at various residences in
the Star and Dilido Islands as well as other Miami Beach locations, has
committed to base their film camp in Miami if the series is picked up by the ABC
Television Network. Also on the horizon is the April 25 theatrical release of
"From Justin to Kelly", a Fox feature film set in Miami Beach.
Middle Beach Neighborhood Meeting Representatives from the
administration and the Police Department are preparing to host a community
meeting on April 14 to address various Middle Beach neighborhood issues. The
meeting, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Nautilus Middle School Cafeteria, 4301
North Michigan Avenue, will provide residents with a forum to express their
concerns as well as receive input from various city departments.
Employee Volunteer Efforts - Employees, in conjunction with the City, have
enthusiastically embraced various volunteer efforts to combat diseases such as
cancer and the AIDS. On April 13, employees are participating in the 15th annual
"AIDS Walk," a run/walk/blade event benefiting programs and those affected by
HIV/AIDS. The event kicks off and ends at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
Also showing their support for the upcoming event "Relay for Life," a Miami
Beach community event designed to celebrate cancer survivorship and raise
money for American Cancer Society research and programs, city employees
from various departments have developed innovative fundraising efforts to
supplement the event's received contributions. The numerous departmental
volunteer efforts have already garnered large financial contributions and will
continue throughout the month of April. "Relay for Life," comprised of 18 hours of
entertainment, food, music and activities, will take place May 3-4 at Miami Beach
Senior High School. Teams of runners have also formed to represent the City in
the 2003 Corporate Run, taking place throughout Downtown Miami on May 8.
The charity event, consisting of a 3.1 mile run/walk, is comprised of employees
throughout Miami-Dade County and supports the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society's fight against blood-related cancers. All fundraising and volunteer
efforts are posted daily on the employee intranet as well as throughout City Hall.
