Resolution 2022-31998RESOLUTION NO. 2022-31998
A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, RECOMMENDING IN FAVOR OF LISTING THE
NORTH BEACH BANDSHELL LOCATED AT 7275 COLLINS AVENUE ON THE
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES.
WHEREAS, the building located at 7275 Collins Avenue, currently known as the North
Beach Bandshell, was constructed in 1961 and embodies the distinctive mid-century modern
characteristics of that historical period (the "Bandshell"); and
WHEREAS, the Bandshell was designed by Miami Beach architect Norman Giller, a
prominent architect who designed other significant structures such as the Carillon Hotel and the
Diplomat hotel, and is widely credited with "inventing" the two-story motel, one of the most
replicated building forms of mid-century architecture; and
WHEREAS, the Bandshell's design features a unique, circular shape with matching
rounded floating cantilevered concrete canopies; a large, covered concrete stage, unique
concrete breeze block; and dramatic columns; and
WHEREAS, the Bandshell has been recognized as a significant structure and its
photograph was featured on the cover of a catalogue for a photography exhibition of mid-century
architecture that traveled to the Municipal Art Society in New York City in the spring of 2002; and
WHEREAS, on October 27, 2021, and pursuant to Ordinance No. 2021-4449, the City of
Miami Beach approved the designation of the Bandshell as a Local Historic Site, following the
unanimous approval of the City's Historic Preservation Board, Planning Board, and Mayor and
City Commission; and
WHEREAS, the Bandshell is adjacent to the North Shore Historic District, a National
Register Historic District comprised of 520 buildings; and
WHEREAS, placing the Bandshell on the National Register of Historic Places will help to
amplify the significance of Miami Beach's contribution to Mid Century Modern architecture.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission recommend in
favor of listing the North Beach Bandshell, located at 7275 Collins Avenue, on the National
Register of Historic Places; and urge the Florida National Register Review Board to approve the
application for the listing of the proposed North Beach Bandshell Historic Site on the National
Register of Historic Places.
