A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF MIAMI
BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE CITY ADMINISTRATION TO ISSUE
A COMPETITIVE SOLICITATION FOR A LANDSCAPING VENDOR TO
PLANT 70 TREES IN 100 DAYS IN THE AREAS OF PARK VIEW PARK,
THE NORTH SHORE YOUTH CENTER, TATUM WATERWAY, TATUM
PARK AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS.
WHEREAS, Miami Beach's trees are a defining and valued feature of the City,
recognized for the important contribution they provide in mitigating the effects of climate
change, beautifying the City's landscaping, and providing shelter to local fauna; and
WHEREAS, trees mitigate the effects of climate change by providing essential
services and benefits to the city, such as:
• removing ozone from the air helping to reduce atmospheric warming and
improving air quality and the public health effects of air pollution;
• storing carbon and reducing the amount returning to the atmosphere as a
greenhouse gas;
• shading and cooling streets/buildings mitigating the urban heat island effect
and reducing the use of air conditioning;
• intercepting and absorbing stormwater, thereby reducing flooding and the
amount entering the City's stormwater system;
• improving water quality by filtering and removing pollutants;
• providing homes, food and shelter for wildlife;
• beautifying the community;
• increasing real estate values by 7-10%;
• positively impacting the overall health of urban residents and lessens the
impacts of urbanization; and
WHEREAS, certain areas in North Beach are currently lacking any shade trees; .
and
WHEREAS, according to the City's Urban Forestry Masterplan, adopted in 2020,
certain areas in North Beach are suffering the greatest urban heat island impacts, and
focusing City efforts and outreach on tree planting and maintenance in North Beach and

other areas most impacted by the effects of the urban heat island can help reduce the
negative impacts caused by these.elevated temperatures; and
WHEREAS, the areas of Park View Park, the North Shore Youth Center, Tatum
Waterway, Tatum Park and the surrounding areas in. North Beach consist of
predominantly multi -family residential buildings, and tree plantings in this area will
advance the City Commission's desire to increase tree canopies in residential
neighborhoods in particular; and
WHEREAS,. funding for the trees has been identified through the current GO Bond
Reforestation Project; and
WHEREAS, the sponsor of this Resolution, Vice Mayor Kristen Rosen Gonzalez,
has worked with the Administration to develop this proposal, including with respect to the
number of trees to be planted and the feasibility of the proposed locations; and
WHEREAS, while the goal is to plant 70 trees in the next 100 days, the
procurement process, as well as contractor and tree availability may require additional
time; and
WHEREAS, as such, the Mayor and City Commission direct the City
Administration to issue a competitive solicitation fora landscaping vendor to plant 70 trees
in the next 100 days in in the areas of Park View Park, the North Shore Youth Center,
Tatum Waterway, Tatum Park and the surrounding areas.
NOW, THEREFORE,;. BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE .CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and. City
Commission, hereby direct. the City Administration to issue a competitive solicitation for a
landscaping vendor to plant 70 trees in the next. 100 days in in. the areas of Park View
Park, the North Shore Youth Center, Tatum Waterway, Tatum Park and the surrounding
areas.
