A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING
THE CITY ADMINISTRATION HOLD IN ABEYANCE ANY
COCONUT PALM TREE REMOVALS ANTICIPATED TO
TAKE PLACE IN LUMMUS PARK (UNLESS THE TREE IS
DISEASED AND/OR PRESENTS DANGER TO PROPERTY
OR PERSONS), UNTIL SUCH TIME AS LEGISLATION
PROPOSED AT THE DECEMBER 8, 2021 CITY
COMMISSION MEETING REGARDING DESIGNATION OF
PALM TREES AS HERITAGE TREES IS CONSIDERED BY
THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION.
WHEREAS, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Ocean Drive, between 5
Street and 14 Place, Lummus Park is a regional asset and one of the most popular
destinations in Miami Beach, featuring a playground, paved paths for walking or biking
and recreational and fitness areas; and
WHEREAS, Lummus Park, known for its beautiful coconut palms, has served as
the backdrop for many television and film scenes, and as the venue for various special
events every year, ranging from concerts to marathons; and
WHEREAS, coconut palms were originally brought to Florida about 100 years ago
from Jamaica, and remain an iconic part of Miami Beach's landscape; and
WHEREAS, the coconut palms in Lummus Park not only provide shade from the
sun but also enhance the ocean views and provide a beautiful, tropical character to the
park; and
WHEREAS, at the December 8, 2021 City Commission meeting, the Mayor and
City Commission referred a discussion regarding codifying palm trees as heritage trees
under Chapter 46 of the City Code to the to Land Use and Sustainability Committee; and
WHEREAS, as such, the Mayor and City Commission direct the City
Administration to hold in abeyance any coconut palm tree removals anticipated to take
place in Lummus Park, unless such tree is diseased and/or presents danger to property
or persons, until such time as legislation proposed at the December 8, 2021 City
Commission meeting regarding designation of palm trees as heritage trees is considered
by the Mayor and City Commission.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby direct the City Administration to hold in abeyance any coconut palm
tree removals anticipated to take place in Lummus Park (unless such tree is diseased
and/or presents danger to property or persons), until such time as legislation proposed at
the December 8, 2021 City Commission meeting regarding designation of palm trees as
heritage trees is considered by the Mayor and City Commission.
