WH ERE AS, Elie Wiesel ("Wiesel) was a prominent Romanian-born Jewish writer and
Holocaust survivor who made significant civic contributions to Jewish history and Jewish-related
initiatives; and
WH EREAS, through his work, Wiesel provided the world with an invaluable firsthand
account of the horrors that the Jewish people have endured; and
WHEREAS, Wiesel remains an integral part of Holocaust literature; and
WHEREAS, during his lifetime, Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and the
Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work and significant contributions to Jewish and human
rights causes; and
WH EREAS, in honor of Wiesel, on December 8, 2021, the Mayor and the City
Commission of the City of Miami Beach adopted Resolution No. 2021-31950, which codesignated
that portion of 19th Street from Meridian Avenue to Muhammad Ali Way (Convention Center
Drive) as "Elie Wiesel Way"; and
WHERE AS, this codesignation is especially fitting given its close proximity to the City
of Miami Beach's Holocaust Memorial, which was built in remembrance of lives taken during the
Holocaust and for the promotion of tolerance and human rights; and
WH EREAS, a copy of Resolution No. 2021-31950 is attached hereto and incorporated by
reference; and

WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach would like the County to install signage indicating
this codesignation on County street signs and traffic signal mast anns; and
WHEREAS, this Board would also like to honor Wiesel by approving the City of Miami
Beach's codesignation of that portion of 19th Street from Meridian Avenue to Muhammad Ali
Way (Convention Center Drive) as "Elie Wiesel Way"; and
WHEREAS, 19th Street from Meridian Avenue to Muhammad Ali Way (Convention
Center Drive) is a city-maintained road located in the City of Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, this codesignation is located in County Commission District 5,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section l. Approves the City of Miami Beach's codesignation of that portion of 19th
Street from Meridian Avenue to Muhammad Ali Way (Convention Center Drive) as "Elie
Wiesel Way".
Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit certified copies of this Resolution
to the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach, the United States Postal Service,
the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Department of Transportation and Public Works, the
Development Services Division of the Regulatory and Economic Resources Department, the City
of Miami Beach Police Department, and the City of Miami Beach Fire Department.
The Prime Sponsor of the foregoing resolution is Commissioner Eileen Higgins. It was
offered by Commissioner Rebeca Sosa , who moved its adoption. The motion was
seconded by Commissioner Oliver G. Gilbert, III and upon being put to a vote, the vote was

A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, APPROVING, BY
5/7TH VOTE, FOLLOWING A DULY NOTICED PUBLIC HEARING,
THE CO-NAMING OF 19TH STREET, LOCATED BETWEEN
MERIDIAN AVENUE AND MUHAMMAD ALI WAY, AS "ELIE
WIESEL WAY," SUBJECT TO FINAL APPROVAL OF THE CO-
NAMING BY THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS, IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 2-1, RULE
9.02 OF THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY CODE.
WHEREAS, on September 17, 2021, the Mayor and City Commission adopted
Ordinance No. 2021-4439, which amended the criteria for the co-naming of City streets
in Section 82-503(c) of the City Code; and
WHEREAS, the new criteria set forth in Section 82-503(c) of the City Code
provides that streets in the City may be co-named streets in honor of prominent Jewish
figures who made significant civic contributions to Jewish history and/or Jewish-related
initiatives, such as Elie Wiesel; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to the request of Commissioner David Richardson, the co-
naming of 19th Street, located between Meridian Avenue and Muhammad Ali Way in
honor of Elie Wiesel was referred to the Neighborhood and Quality of Life Committee
("NQLC") for the Committee's consideration and review; and
WHEREAS, Elie Wiesel was a Romanian-born Jewish writer and Holocaust
survivor who provided the world with an invaluable firsthand account of the horrors that
the Jewish people had endured and remains an integral part of Holocaust literature; and
WHEREAS, during his lifetime, Mr. Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
and the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his significant civic contributions to Jewish
history and Jewish-related initiatives; and
WHEREAS, co-naming 19" Street, located between Meridian Avenue and
Muhammad Ali Way, would be appropriate and fitting due to its proximity to the City's
Holocaust Memorial, a striking, beautiful memorial built for the remembrance of lives
taken not only during the Holocaust but for the promotion of tolerance and human rights;
and
WHEREAS, at its October 29, 2021 meeting, the NQLC considered the request
for the co-naming of 19 Street in honor of Elie Wiesel and without making a
recommendation on the merits, directed for this proposal to be fully considered by the
City Commission; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach, after the

duly noticed public hearing on December 8, 2021, considered the co-naming request, and
approved the co-naming of 19th Street, located between Meridian Avenue, and
Muhammad Ali Way as "Elie Wiesel Way" by a 5/7 vote; and
WHEREAS, as 19th Street, located between Meridian Avenue, and Muhammad
Ali Way, is a platted, public road, the proposed co-naming must be approved by the
Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners pursuant to Rule 9.02 of Section 2-
1 of the Miami-Dade County Code.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby approve, by 5/7 vote, following a duly noticed public hearing, the
co-naming 19" Street, Meridian Avenue, and Muhammad Ali Way, as "Elie Wiesel Way,"
subject to final approval of the co-naming by the Miami-Dade County Board Of County
Commissioners, in accordance with Section 2-1, Rule 9.02 of the Miami-Dade County
Code.

CODESIGNATION OF THAT PORTION OF

WEST 28TH STREET AS "RABBI SOLOMON SCHIFF WA Y"
WHEREAS, Rabbi Solomon Schiff ("Rabbi Schiff), born on August 5, 1929, was a
pivotal force in building South Florida's Jewish Community, an advocate for racial justice, and a
builder of interfaith relationships locally and around the world; and
WHEREAS, since coming to South Florida in 1958, Rabbi Schiff was on the forefront of
building interfaith and interracial relations in our community, including welcoming Pope John
Paul II to Miami in September of 1987; and
WHEREAS, Rabbi Schiff was a former director of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation's
Jewish Chaplaincy Program (now known as Mishkan Miami), and also a former Executive Vice
President of the Rabbinical Association of Greater Miami ("Rabbinical Association"); and
WHEREAS, Rabbi Schiff served both of these organizations for more than 40 years; and
WHEREAS, the Rabbinical Association has remained an important voice on matters
within the County's Jewish and general community; and
WHEREAS, shortly after becoming president of the Rabbinical Association in May of
1963, Rabbi Schiff joined with other community clergy in calling for equal rights for all during
the height of the Civil Rights Movement; and
WHEREAS, Rabbi Schiff was also a founding member and past chairman of the
Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, a committee of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation; and

WHEREAS, for his service on interfaith relations, Rabbi Schiff received a Papal Medal
from Pope Benedict XVI in 2008; and
WHEREAS, additionally, in 201 7, Rabbi Schiff received a Legion of Honor A ward from
the Philadelphia-based Chapel of the Four Chaplains, joining the ranks of other past recipients,
including former United States Presidents Harry Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter,
and Ronald Reagan, as well as Nelson Mandela, former United States Senator Bill Nelson, and
comedian/actor Bob Hope; and
WHEREAS, on April 1, 2021, Rabbi Schiff passed away at the age of 92 years old; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of Rabbi Schiffs spiritual leadership, the Mayor and City
Commission of the City of Miami Beach, on January 20, 2022, adopted Resolution No.
2022-32013, which codesignated that portion of Meridian Avenue from Dade Boulevard to
West 28th Street as "Rabbi Solomon Schiff Way"; and
WHEREAS, a copy of Resolution No. 2022-32013 is attached hereto and incorporated by
reference; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach would like the County to install signage indicating
this codesignation on County street signs and traffic signal mast arms; and
WHEREAS, this Board would also like to recognize Rabbi Schiffs spiritual leadership
by approving the City of Miami Beach's codesignation of that portion of Meridian A venue from

C ivil Rights M ovem ent; and
W HEREAS, fo r his service on interfaith relations, R abbi S chiff received a P apal M edal
from P ope B enedict X V I in 2008, and in in 2017, he received a Legion of Honor Aw ard fr om the
Philadelphia-based C hapel of the Four Chaplains, joining the ranks of other past recipients
including fo rm er United States P residents Harry Trum an, D w ight D . Eisenhow er, Jim m y C arter
and R onald Reagan as w ell as Nelson M andela, fo rm er U .S . S en. Bill Nelson and com edian/actor
B ob Hope; and

WHEREAS, at its September 20, 2021 meeting, the NQLC considered the request, and
recommended in favor of the co-naming; and
WHEREAS, co-naming the portion of Meridian Avenue, located between Dade Boulevard
and 28" Street after Rabbi Schiff would be especially fitting considering that he resided at 2444
Meridian Avenue for over 50 years; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami Beach, after the duly
noticed public hearing on January 20, 2022, considered the co-naming request, accepted the
recommendation of the NQLC, and approved the co-naming of the portion of Meridian Avenue,
located between Dade Boulevard and 28th Street, as "Rabbi Solomon Schiff Way" by a 5/7 vote;
and
WHEREAS, as Meridian Avenue is a platted, public road, the proposed co-naming must
be approved by the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners pursuant to Rule 9.02
of Section 2-1 of the Miami-Dade County Code.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City Commission hereby accept
the recommendation of the Neighborhood/Community Affairs Committee, and approve, by 5/7"
vote, following a duly noticed public hearing, the co-naming of the portion of Meridian Avenue,
located between Dade Boulevard and 28th Street, as "Rabbi Solomon Schiff Way," subject to final
approval of the co-naming by the Miami-Dade County Board Of County Commissioners, in
accordance with Section 2-1, Rule 9.02 of the Miami-Dade County Code.
