SUBJECT : MAYORS' CHESS CHALLENGE & CHESS PROGRAMMING
The City of Miami Beach Parks and Recreation Department is proud to announce its
participation in the annual Mayors' Chess Challenge, to be held on Sunday, May 15, 2022,
from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Scott Rakow Youth Center (2700 Sheridan Avenue).
The Mayors' Chess Challenge is aimed at drawing attention to the scholastic benefits of
chess not only in schools, but in the community as well. The initiative provides an
opportunity for players of all ages to get together for a free and friendly game of chess,
and fun with community leaders.
In addition to the Mayors' Chess Challenge, the Parks and Recreation Department has
partnered with the National Scholastic Chess Foundation to promote chess instruction ,
education, and community engagement in the City of Miami Beach. Through the
partnership, children enrolled in the City's summer camp and after-school programs will
receive free chess instruction to help foster learning of the one of the oldest and most
popular board games in the world. This partnership is made possible in part by
Commissioner Mark Samuelian's donation of surplus campaign funds to be used toward
scholastic chess initiatives and his commitment to expand opportunities for Miami Beach
residents to learn and play the game of chess .
The Parks and Recreation Department will also offer free open chess play for all ages at
the North Shore Park Youth Center (501 72 nd Street) on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to
12:00 p.m. and on Sundays at the Scott Rakow Youth Center from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
All skill levels are welcome.
