SUBJECT: Miami Beach is Awarded $454,000 in Additional Resilient Florida Grant Funding
I am pleased to report that the City has been awarded an additional $454,000.00 in grant funding
from the Resilient Florida Grant Program. This award will fund the update to the vulnerability
assessment and adaptation plan, which includes buildings, roads, and additional assets, and
expand to include social vulnerability and heat stress. The planning will incorporate updated sea
level rise projections, elevation models, hurricane modeling, and create a compound flood model,
building on existing work. The planning process will also include community engagement.
Vulnerability assessments are required by the Resilient Florida program to assess and identify
critical infrastructure at risk of flooding from sea level rise, storm surge and rainfall events. The
assessments assist local communities in prioritizing and developing implementation strategies
and projects designed to reduce, alleviate, or mitigate the effects of flooding.
Robust resilience planning to protect our community has been essential to position our projects
for funding and demonstrate the City's commitment to holistic resilience. The City has been
awarded more than $47 million in funding through the Resilient Florida program. Projects include
First Street, Fire Station 1, North Beach Town Center, Dune Enhancements, and Gravity Sewer
Mains Replacement.
I'd like to thank Amy Knowles, Chief Resilience Officer; Cristina Ortega, City Engineer; and Judy
Hoanshelt, Grants and Intergovernmental Affairs Division Director and their teams.
