A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, ACCEPTING THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE
PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE AT
ITS MARCH 29, 2022 MEETING, TO ACCEPT A GIFT OF A
MONUMENT/BUST OF BENITO JUAREZ FROM THE CONSULATE
GENERAL OF MEXICO IN MIAMI, FLORIDA, AND AUTHORIZING THE
ADMINISTRATION TO DETERMINE THE FINAL LOCATION FOR
PLACEMENT OF THE BUST WITHIN COLLINS PARK.
WHEREAS, at its October 7, 2021 meeting, the City's Hispanic Affairs Committee
passed a motion requesting for City to approve and accept a gift of a monument/bust of Benito
Juarez from the Consulate General of Mexico in Miami, Florida to be placed within Collins Park
(Exhibit B); and
WHEREAS, during the October 13, 2021 City Commission meeting, the Mayor and
City Commission made a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life
Committee (the "Committee")to discuss the Hispanic Affairs Committee motion (Exhibit A); and
WHEREAS, during its March 29, 2022 meeting, the Committee discussed and passed a
motion recommending for the City to accept the gift of a monument/bust of Benito Juarez from
the Consulate General of Mexico, and for the Administration to identify a suitable park location
for the bust, as well as associated costs; and
WHEREAS, Collins Park is the ideal location to feature the monument/bust of Benito
Juarez since other historical Latin American figures such as Jose Marti, Simon Bolivar, and
Carlos Finlay are also featured there; and
WHEREAS, the sizing of the monument/bust will be similar to the others installed at the
park; and
WHEREAS, the Consulate General of Mexico will be covering the cost of the pedestal
that the monument/bust will be installed on, and there will be no fiscal impact for the City.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission approve the recommendation of the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of
Life Committee, at its on March 29, 2022 meeting, to accept a gift of a monument/bust of Benito
Juarez from the Consulate General of Mexico in Miami, Florida, and authorizing the
Administration to determine the final location for placement of the bust within Collins Park.

RECOMMENDATION
Approve the recommendation of the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life
Committee meeting on March 29, 2022 accepting a gift of a monument/bust of Benito Juarez
from the Consulate General of Mexico in Miami to be placed at Collins Park.
BACKGROUNDDIISTORY a _
During the October 13, 2021 City Commission meeting, a referral to the Public Safety and
Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee was passed to discuss the Hispanic Affairs
Committee motion on accepting a gift of a monument/bust of Benito Juarez. (Exhibit A)
During the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee meeting on March 29
2022, the committee motioned to approve the gift of a monument/bust of Benito Juarez from
the Consulate General of Mexico in Miami and for the Administration to identify a suitable park
location and associated costs.
ANALYSIS
During the October 7, 2021 Hispanic Affairs Committee meeting, a motion was made and
approved to accept a gift of a monument/bust of Benito Juarez from the Consulate General of
Mexico in Miami to be placed at Collins Park. (Exhibit B)
Collins Park is the ideal location to feature the monument/bust of Benito Juarez since other
historical Latin American figures such as Jose Marti, Simon Bolivar, Dr. Luis Henry DeBayle,
and Carlos Finlay are also featured there. The sizing of the monument/bust will be similar to the

The purpose of this Letter to Commission (LTC) is to notify the Mayor and City
Commission of a motion made and passed by the Hispanic Affairs Committee
during the September 7, 2021 Hybrid (phone and in person) Board Meeting.

needed.
