Hudak, City Manager vnc--~I.AI\.A-+'or-- Date: May 11, 2022 Subject: City of Miami Beach Dual Enrollment Program Status Miami Beach Senior High School and Miami Beach Nautilus Middle School The purpose of this Letter to Commission is to provide information on the status of our partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS), Florida International University, and Miami- Dade College to increase dual enrollment courses at Miami Beach Senior High School and Miami Beach Nautilus Middle School. Additionally, the City partnered with the University of Florida to expand course offerings at Miami Beach Senior High School for 2022-23. The chart below provides information on the number of course and class sections available to students following the implementation of the partnership in Fall 2014, as well as the financial savings to Miami Beach families for those children choosing to enroll in dual enrollment classes offered at Miami Beach public schools funded by the city in a total amount since program inception of $3,099,375.21. The dual enrollment program at Miami Beach Senior High School and Miami Beach Nautilus Middle School allows eligible students to enroll in a college course and high school class simultaneously. The credits the students earn are used towards both a high school diploma and are acceptable towards a college Associate or Bachelor degree, or technical certificate. The benefits of offering dual enrollment courses to high school and middle school students include: Saves students and parents money, as dual enrollment students are exempt from paying application, registration, tuition , laboratory, and special fees if the classes taken are being used toward high school graduation • Enriches the course opportunities for outstanding high school / middle school students Shortens the time to attain a college degree • Provides students with college credit that is transferable to a college or university Allows grades earned to become part of the students' permanent transcripts Dual enrollment course offerings include, but are not limited to, the following for the 2022-23 school year: Architecture and Humanity • Ballet Techniques I Criminology Fundamentals of Argumentation and Debate • Individual in Society • Introduction to Entrepreneurship Introduction to Business • Introduction of Sociology • Modern Dance Techniques • Public Speaking • Fundamentals of Argumentation and Debate Psychology of Personal Effectiveness • Social Problems • Strategies for Success Survey of Architectural History • Writing in Rhetoric I • Writing in Rhetoric II We will continue to support our vision of being a prosperous city with a special flavor of arts, culture, education, and business with management objectives of being known for (K-12) educational excellence.
