A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, DIRECTING THE CITY
ADMINISTRATION TO STUDY AND IDENTIFY THE COSTS, METHODS,
AND FEASIBILITY OF UPDATING OR REPLACING CERTAIN "NO
PARKING" SIGNAGE LOCATED THROUGHOUT THE CITY, FOR THE
PURPOSE OF. INCLUDING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE
SIGNAGE VIA "QR CODE" TECHNOLOGY, WHICH WOULD PROVIDE
RESIDENTS AND VISITORS WITH RELEVANT INFORMATION ON
THEIR DIGITAL DEVICES REGARDING THE AVAILABILITY AND
LOCATION OF PUBLIC PARKING FACILITIES IN. THE CITY; AND
FURTHER, REFERRING THIS CUSTOMER SERVICE INITIATIVE TO
THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE
COMMITTEE FOR ITS REVIEW AND CONSIDERATION.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Beach (the "City") displays appropriate signage
regarding zones and areas where parking is not permitted, or restricted, throughout the
City; and
WHEREAS, these areas and/or zones include, but are not limited to,
loading/unloading zones, resident-only parking areas, safety zones, and certain right-of-
ways throughout the City; and
WHEREAS, a quick response code ("QR Code") is a type of barcode technology
that can be scanned and read quickly by a digital device, such as a smartphone, allowing
a user to rapidly receive and review certain information; and
WHEREAS, the use of certain technologies, such as QR Codes connected to an
application or website, may serve as a useful tool for providing information to drivers
regarding the availability and locations of public parking facilities in the City; and
WHEREAS, similar to other customer service initiatives within the City, this
initiative will assist drivers with identifying public parking options available to them in the
City; and
WHEREAS, the ability to provide detailed information to drivers via the QR Code
technology could also serve to reduce the amount of time drivers spend searching for
available parking, and thereby decrease vehicle usage throughout the City, reducing
traffic and benefiting the environment; and
WHEREAS, vehicles parked in "No Parking" zones within the City create a burden
on the City's parking enforcement officers to enforce; and
WHEREAS, greater access to public parking information may reduce the need for
and reliance on parking enforcement in areas where parking is prohibited and may assist
the City in conserving valuable City resources.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, that the Mayor and City
Commission hereby directs the City Administration to study and identify the costs,
methods, and feasibility of updating or replacing certain "No Parking" signage located
throughout the City, for the purpose of including additional information on the signage via
"QR Code" technology, which would provide residents and visitors with relevant
information on their digital devices regarding the availability and location of public parking
facilities in the City; and further, referring this customer-service initiative to the Public
Safety and Neighborhood Quality Of Life Committee for its review and consideration.
