PROJECT DESCRIPTION
BACKGROUND/DESCRIPTION OF NEED
Grantee (Blue Scholars Initiative) is partnering with ARTSail to harness the power of visual art
for environmental stewardship.
The proposed project, Modeling the Reef, by artist Beatriz Chachamovits, is an interdisciplinary
public education and art project designed to provide access to and awareness of the decline of
coral reef ecosystems, and craft knowledge by youth in under-served communities.
The project consists of three phases with distinct learning and material outcomes. Students will
first discover Miami's underwater ecosystems through an interactive marine ecology lesson
followed by a coral sculpting workshop led by the artist to craft their own ceramic coral
sculptures. Simultaneously, another group of students will video-document these first two
phases and work with the youth artists to create an "Ocean Hero" PSA.
The work produced by the youth will contribute to a large-scale collective reef installation which
will be unveiled in Miami Beach during the 2022 World Ocean Weekend Celebration.
We envision using the funds from this grant to subsidize in part phase 1 and 2 of this project:
the educational component and the workshops lead by the artist.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Modeling the Reef is a project that perfectly embodies the mission of the two main collaborating
partners: to empower youth to catch the prevailing winds in their sails, explore the wonders of
Marine Science, and discover their crucial role in our Earth's future; and to move communities
from climate awareness to climate action.
Through Grantee's partnerships with organizations such as Breakthrough Miami, The
Motivational Edge, and Overtown Optimist Club we expect to engage with approximately 150
youth, ages 9-17, many who live just minutes from Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean but who
have never connected with either. We are organizing a total of 17-18 in-person 2-hour workshops,
over the course of a 3-month period.
Like coral, the phases of realizing this community-based artwork grow outwards from the initial
education component, with opportunities for new public outreach and discovery at each level.
Although the focus of the project is oriented towards the value that art-making can bring to the
youth, the possible reach of a raised ecological awareness in younger generations will have a
Page 17
valuable impact on their families and friends. From there, the public will witness a community-built
installation on the beach which can spark conversations between fellow students and passersby,
all of which will have a direct positive effect on the health of our beaches and marine ecosystems.
The World Ocean Weekend Celebration, planned for June 11 and 12, 2022,will provide the stage
for this increased outreach, by expanding the audience well beyond the youth initially engaged
with the workshops, through the combined efforts of the organizing partners.
Building on the success of the first World Ocean Weekend Celebration, held on June 12 and 13,
2021, we will once again collaborate with organizations such as Surfrider Miami, International
SeaKeepers Society, VolunteerCleanup, Clean Miami Beach, Frost Science and many more,
hence providing free activities ranging from art, recreation and impact to science, education and
entertainment bringing together South Florida youth and community members to enjoy, engage
with, and protect our ONE World Ocean.
The staff at Blue Scholars and ARTSail, under Blue Scholars supervision, will engage with every
step of this process: from planning and attending the workshops; to assisting the artist with any
need she might have in conjunction with her teaching engagement, as well as support in creating,
storing, and installing the coral reef sculptures; through to promotion and marketing outreach.
Blue Scholars Co-Directors, Adam Steckley and Meredith Bass, will be the primary liaisons with
the student groups and will coordinate and manage the World Ocean Weekend Celebration. In
addition, Mrs. Bass will facilitate the Ocean Hero Challenge, providing direction to the student
filmmakers and assisting throughout the production. Ombretta Agra Andruff, founder and
Executive Director of ARTSail Residency and Research Initiative, under supervision of Grantee,
will be mostly engaged with the artistic process and will closely follow and support Beatriz
Chachamovits as the project develops.

Hotel, located at 2201 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139.
GRANT ACTIVITIES
(Include activity name, activity description, description of service recipients, and number of service
recipients)
The workshops with Beatriz Chachamovits will take place in the locations at the dates/times
indicated above. They will engage with approximately 150 youth, ages 9-17, many who live just
minutes from Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean but who have never connected with either.
During the workshops the youth will learn about marine ecology and craft coral sculptures in clay
which together will compose the coral reef installation.
The finished coral installation will be assembled by the workshop participants and passersby,
under the supervision of the artist, and displayed on the beach facing the W South Beach Hotel
on June 11th. We are investigating the possibility of showing the installation in some of the
schools/organizations that have taken part in the workshops after the weekend event.
The Saturday beach and ocean activities, including the art activations, will take place on the
stretch of coastline facing the hotel, between 21st and 22nd Street. Based on last year's
attendance numbers, we expect between 350 and 500 people to attend and participate in the day
activities.
Participation in the workshops, as well as all beach and ocean activities, will be free and open to
the public. An Eventbrite registration will be however requested to monitor attendance number
and crowd control, should there be any Covid-19 restrictions in place.
On Sunday June 12, we will host ocean-focused talks with experts in ocean conservation,
adaptation and mitigation practices, as well as environmental artists, (with a TBD list of speakers),
as well as a 1.5 hrs screening program of ocean-focused films. The screening program will be
organized in collaboration with the San Francisco based International Ocean Film Festival, whom
we successfully worked with last year. For this Sunday evening events there will be a nominal
minimum donation in the range of$10 per ticket. An Eventbrite invitation will be created to accept
donations and monitor attendance. We are expecting approximately 200/250 people to attend
the evening events.
Page 19
The audience will be a mix of W Hotel customers, youth who participated in the workshops and
their families; artists and art aficionados; climate and environmental activists.
GOALS/OUTCOMES
(Include outcomes, measures, and targets)
During the'20-'21 school year, Blue Scholars provided free marine science programming to 1,180
fourth and fifth grade students from Miami-Dade County community-based organizations, and
public and private schools. A pre-/post-program student survey measures the program's
effectiveness in promoting substantial increases in students' environmental awareness. The
same survey will also be shared with the youth participating in the workshops. Each group will
complete the survey before their initial workshop phase and at the completion of phase two.
An estimated 350 people attended the 2021 event. With increased marketing efforts provided by
Quinn PR, and new partnerships, we expect this number, as well as press coverage, to grow
exponentially. Any press coverage shall be coordinated with the City Contract Administrator and
all press releases shall require the prior written approval of the City Contract Administrator.
With required registration on Eventbrite for all of our events,we will be able to monitor attendance.
The Saturday beach activation will be free and open to the public, providing access for all, while
the Sunday theater engagement will be ticketed. We will also keep track of the number of
organizations, schools and youth we will engage with which will present another tangible outcome.
In addition to our own photographer and videographer, the student groups will document the entire
process for their public service announcement (PSAs) video, starting with the workshops, the
youth engagement, and following the progress of the reef sculpture in-the-making. The goal is to
create a short documentary video of the entire project, and use this process to address the beauty,
fragility and importance of corals. The PSAs will be screened during the Sunday evening event
in conjunction with the International Ocean Film Festival. Grantee shall secure written
authorization from any participants being photographed or filmed.
Grantee, in its sole discretion, may arrange to showcase the reef installation in some of the
locations that hosted the workshops.
