SOUTH[ FLORIDA YOUTH
FOUNDATION
Biography:
South Florida Youth Foundation
The South Florida Youth Foundation was founded in the year 2001,to raise needed
funds, and provide direct assistance to elementary aged children in Overtown and Liberty
City. These necessary tools helped provide a successful school year. Karen Fryd its
director, had already started assisting children with school supplies since 1999 after
visiting Fredrick Douglass Elementary in Overtown.A teacher had explained that many
children could not do their homework without the basics.Together with School and
Neighborhood Resource Officers from the City of Miami Police department, she
identified specific needs such as uniforms, sweaters, shoes, school supplies and books
that prevented children from successfully completing their school year."
In addition, turkey drives,Christmas toy drives were added as well as working with High
Schools. Later came programming in schools(Youth Crime Patrol Watch)and basically
any need that was presented that seemed to be in budget.Help was given to many
including YMCA at Holmes Elementary, Summer Camp for foster children, and gardens
at many schools,Turners Kindergarten,PTA Programs, and the band at Fredrick
Douglass who had no uniforms to perform. Over 300;000 articles of brand-new clothes
were distributed(this was thru relationship with Hanes Company)Surplus on trucks were
organized to drive to Hurricane Katrina's most devastated neighborhoods thanks to
friends at Channel 10. Computers were donated as well as over 40,000 backpacks, with
supplies inside.Karen also had Christmas parties at the New Horizons Senior Center in
Liberty City.Thru my relationship with the Police Department"I have gotten to know"
many different age groups! Many of the seniors have no family, and thanks to
Community Affairs Office from Miami's Police many elders were taken care of.
My inspiration has been the wonderful children, the dedicated teachers, Miami Police
Department and their sincere focus on bettering the lives of children with wonderful
prevention programs, all the wonderful friends and volunteers that have helped, and the
generous donors that trusted and contributed to me. I am proud to say that I work at
home, and have no overhead, enabling me to donate 100%of contributions directly to the

Foundation.Karen has also worked with the"Trainable Mentally Handicapped Program"
at Booker T. Washington. These young adults have been thriving with their new program
which is a working kitchen. Most at graduation want to work in culinary field! She also
started program such as"Violins against Violence"which puts a violin in young
Children's hands in at-risk neighborhoods."Midnight Basketball"took place at The
Miami Rescue Mission in the hopes of giving youth alternatives. These activities inspired
a positive focus that eliminated the chances of crime.
Numerous Projects were established:
Notables are"The Prom Shop"at Lindsey Hopkins Technical school"as well as"The
Shop".Believing that Prom was important to homeless and neediest youth In MDCPS'S
Karen along with Dian Venturini—Director of Fund and Resource Development co—
founded these two spaces that took car of Neediest and homeless youth and all given for
free.Thousands of students have been helped in the District which includes schools from
North Miami to Homestead. Our goal was just to have students and families feel
"Normal". Schools come to this happy place to pick anything they need and all for free.
Served are Disability Programs as well as schools for teen Moms.
In later years Karen was invited to be on the Board of"The Arsht"which has been one of
her proudest moments."The Arsht"is a beacon of light that is guided by inclusivity and
diversity. Students with Disabilities are celebrated and nurtured, mental Health is
recognized and offered,Alvin Ailey Camp embraces and encourages children thru the
Arts and motivates them enough to overcome feelings of low self-esteem.
Understanding the power of"The Arts"in all its strength, power to heal and beauty has
been a great gift to me.
Thank you
