97-22447 RESO RESOLUTION NO. 97-22447 A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY 01= MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING, RETROACTIVELY, THE RENEWAL OF THE VICTIMS OF CRIME ACT (VOCA) GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $42,609.00. WHEREAS, the State of Florida, under the auspices of the Victims of Crime Ac t (VOCA), has agreed to renew the existing VeCA grant awarded in July, 1996; and WHEREAS, the Police Department is desirous of renewing this grant for the period of July 1, 1997 to June 30, 1998; and WHEREAS, the total funds for the grant are $42,609.00, with the State of Florija funding $34,087.00 and the City providing matching funds in the amount of $8,522.0(, from the Police Confiscations Account. The funds will be used to pay the salary and benefits of one domestic violence counselor, office supplies and operating expensEls; and WHEREAS, the deadline for submission of the grant application is July 3, 1 H9~'. The Police Department did not receive the renewal application package until June 1 a 1997 and with preparation time and Commission meeting dates, retroactive authorization is necessary. NOW THEREFORE BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA that approval is granted, retroactively, to renew the VeCA grant for the period of July 1, 1997 to June 30, 1 Sil9i and the budgeting and expenditure of funds under the grant is authorized. ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDATION Approve the Resolution. BACKGROUND In July, 1995, the Police Department was awarded a grant by the State of Florida Line er the auspices of the Victims of Crime Act (VQCA). The grant funds were used to hire a n'3W Domestic Violence Counselor and associated office equipment and operating costs T 1e Domestic Violence Counselor has been working since the grant was awarded. The State of Florida has agreed to renew this grant for the period of July 1, 1997 to JU1e 30, 1998. The State will provide $34,087.00 in grant funds. The City will provide matGhi1g funds in the amount of $8,522.00 from the Police Confiscations Account. The funds will be used to continue to enhance both the quality and quantity of services that are providud. Retroactive approval is necessary as the deadline for submission of the grant package is July 3, 1997. The Police Department did not receive the grant package from the State u1til June 10, 1997. The preparation time required for the grant package as well as Commi5s on meeting dates necessitate retroactive approval. CONCLUSION The approval of the grant will enable the City and the Police Department to continue to proDe this most valuable service to the citizens of the City.
